A brand new and very attractive hotel called The Tempus built to the highest standards, separate from the original Charlton Hall. Large and very comfortable ground-floor room and bathroom, opening out onto the patio and terrace with views to beautiful open country. Excellent sophisticated cuisine and friendly staff. Dog-friendly, with welcome biscuits provided! Location not far from the sea. Very good value.

Lack of bath in the bathroom despite lots of space. Over-complicated 'touch' lightswitches, hard to see in the dark. Still a lot of building work in progress, with some associated noise. Our satnav couldn't find the hotel. Directions are needed from Booking.com and/or the hotel saying that the hotel address of Chathill is misleading; the driveway into the estate grounds is indicated by a sign on the A1 near the beginning of a short stretch of dual carriageway.

The hotel is gorgeous and has a quirky design with beautifully decorated rooms. We stayed in the Tempus Junior Suite, which exceeded our expectations. The staff were very attentive, and the food served at the restaurant for dinner, breakfast, and the wedding was exceptional.

It's hard to find faults with this hotel. However, the iron in our room did not have a steam function, making it very difficult to press our garments. The quality of the iron was poor. We had to make a trip into Alnwick to buy a steam iron so we could re-press our wedding clothes, which had become creased during travel. Additionally, the Wi-Fi was not high speed in our opinion, and the book in our room had the incorrect password written inside. While it is a minor point, a hotel charging £350 per night should get these details right. None of the above would stop us staying at the hotel again though.

What can I say? This place is an amazing hidden gem. We were looking for somewhere close to Alnwick Castle and the gardens. We stumbled upon Charlton Hall and so glad we did. The staff are exceptional. They are so welcoming from the moment we arrived until we departed. I have never experienced a place where every single staff member was so friendly, kind, welcoming, and professional. They are a credit to the hotel. We stayed in Charlton Hall rather than the part next to the restaurant and we were so glad we did. It is so quirky and incredibly unusual. We stayed in Harry (all rooms have names) and none of the decor should have matched yet it was stunning. The rooms are very clean and well maintained. The bathroom is spotless and they provide beautiful toiletries. A bathrobe and slippers can be found in the wardrobe which was such a lovely touch. The bed is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. I wanted to bring the mattress home! We had dinner at The Tempest. It was delicious! I have to give a mention to the staff again. They were so lovely! Fortunately we had some clear weather when we stayed so were able to enjoy the outdoor seating after our meal which was lovely. We also enjoyed breakfast before leaving. I would highly recommend eating here. The location is great for all tourist attractions at and around Alnwick. It was just a 10 minute drive to the castle and gardens. I cannot say enough positive things about Charlton Hall. It is an incredible place to stay and will definitely be visiting again (even just to see the giraffe).

Wow....where to start. Fabulous hotel, from the accommodation, reception, quality of breakfast, ditto for evening meal and excellent service from each and every one of the staff. You would be mad not to give this place a go and we can quite understand why it is a very popular wedding destination - it is superb. We had a fabulous family room as we typically travel with our adult daughter who has learning disabilities, so when I say the staff were excellent, they truly were, kind and considerate at all times. The hotel is dog friendly and has an array of additional accommodation, from Plantation Pods around a small lake and additional buildings dotted around the estate. It is like another world - very highly recommended.

The comfort and decor of the whole place is amazing. We were amazed to find it was a relative new build. The thought and details that have gone into it is wonderful. All the staff were amazing, really well trained but friendly, .you should be proud of them. Spacious comfortable room, large bed (room 212), large bathroom with super shower a nd large bath. Wardrobes that light up as you approach them, fridge, clever lighting system and spotlessly clean. Food in restaurant was great, both dinner and breakfast. Location close to coastal road. Couldn't have wished for more.

Some of it was too high tech for its own good, and some design over functionality. Lighting system was unnecessarily complex - fine in your own home, but for a 2 night stay no one wants to spend endless time trying to sort which button does what, blinding each other or plunging into darkness against one’s wishes. Taps in the bathroom were beautiful but too low - to fill the kettle or to comfortably wash hands. And no response to maintenance issues raised re failed lightbulbs (in the lights we could have easily controlled!)

Food was very good and young barman made exceptionally good cocktails.

Woman on reception was quite abrupt. There was a queue at check out so we agreed I'd pay after breakfast. We took our time and I was waiting for my sister to return from the ladies when the same receptionist sought me out, "reminding" me checkout was at 10....I thought we'd agreed to sort it out after breakfast. We HAD vacated the room already and I'd have paid her at 10am had there not been a queue! A 10am is check out is way too early anyway and in comparison to elsewhere I've stayed... It's meant to be a break not rushed. I found her attitude quite rude and didn't appreciate her manner.

Beautiful setting. Fantastic decor. Mix of old and new in Chartlton Hall which we loved. Spotlessly clean room with comfy bed. Nice linen and robes. Lovely toiletries. Gorgeous restaurant and food exceptional. Good selection of wines and cocktails. Friendly staff. Perfect location for exploring beautiful Northumberland.

We loved our stay and would definitely return. If we were to really nit pick... 1)It would be nice if waiting staff introduced themselves. They do have name badges but it feels more personal if an introduction is made. 2) When we arrived at reception the lovely receptionist directed us to our room which was in the seperate building of Charlton Hall. For a really special service it would have been great to have been shown the way and perhaps our cases taken.

Beautiful location with easy access just off A1. Stayed in the Barn Rooms - wonderfully quiet and comfortable with excellent facilities - tea/coffee, espresso pods, toiletries, robes and slippers. Bed fantastically comfortable and the included breakfast was very high quality. Can't believe how much we got for the price! Breakfast staff in particular were excellent, attentive and helpful even during very busy periods

Access along a short single track road - well maintained with passing places but if you're a nervous driver it might not be for you!

The surroundings were superb and the buildings and facilities were excellent. Parking was a little bit of an issue at the reception end of the complex, ended up in the overspill at the furthest point from reception at rear of the property. Check in was easy and quick and staff were brilliant. Reservations for the orangery were made without any issue by reception staff. Room was great, however there were a few negatives. Small room although the space is used well, the tv in the doorway was a little annoying, especially if someone is in the room watching and the other leaves. (Tv gets in the way of the door) One of the bathroom taps was loose on the basin, may major issue. The standing fan in the room was a hindrance, firstly it was broken and made horrific noise when turned on, took this to pieces and fixed it. Although it was a poor design for the room it was a godsend at bedtime. The lights behind the headboard were a lovely addition however when turned on showed that the recess behind the head board had not been visited by a duster in quite some time. Bed was very comfortable but loose headboard clashed off the wall everytime someone moved in bed. Very nice decoration and well turned out room on the whole. Meal in the orangery was absolutely stunning and the breakfast was just as good. (Well recommended) staff in the restaurant and bar were excellent, friendly and very attentive. We visited the large teepee outside in the grounds and watched the live singer, a local fella who was brilliant. The bar inside was fully stocked staff attentive and efficient. I loved the dog friendly aspect, for the most part owners were very good and kept their dogs under control. The teepee had lots of seating and was very comfortable and warm with the open fire table roaring. I did realise on arriving home I had left a new bottle of aftershave in the room, however on contacting the hotel they spoke to housekeeping staff and stated nothing had been found.
