Amazing location, probably the best in York! super friendly staff, lovely restaurant & cute/quaint rooms. We actually liked that the parking was away from the hotel. Most of the tiny streets around the hotel are blocked off for pedestrians during the day anyway and so it is much easier to be out of all of that. It took us only 7 or 8 minutes to walk to the hotel from the carpark. We didn’t find it a hassle at all. Also the restaurant is super busy so make sure you book before your stay. We did, as recommended, and were glad!

We booked a standard room, so the bed was a small double (husband 6ft4 so a tad small), also, our room faced the afternoon sun and although the temperature outside was quite mild, the room get very hot, and apart from a fan, there is no aircon so in the height of summer, if you don’t like the heat, it would be extremely uncomfortable. Also a minor thing, there was no hairdryer & that’s a basic expectation these days. If you have mobility issues considerations are the stairs (all rooms are only accessible by stairs) and car park.

This hotel is the CUTEST. Super old building but it's the perfect vibe while in York. While the rooms are small (my bathroom and the low ceiling specifically very much so) they are so cosy and decorated amazing so you don't mind the size at all, I loved it in fact. Staff were super friendly and helpful, breakfast was amazing and the dining area so lovely. The location is perfect, not too far from parking either.

Note that due to the old building, there is no lifts. We had huge bags as we were travelling for a while around the UK, and we were on the top floor, maybe 3-4 flights, just be aware of that and I felt so bad for the staff having to carry them up but they were so lovely.

Breakfast was ok although could do with beans and tomato been hot as they were nearly cold. Evening meal was superb so not sure if its a different chief in the evening. We stayed in room 5 which definitely needs a new mattress as the springs were awful (especially the side nearest to the door). We stayed directly above room 5 the year before and the beds were comfort and somehow didn't seem to get as much noise ( although it was New Year's Eve).

I would probably ask for a room at the back of the hotel if it was New Year's Eve again. Plus the bed was uncomfortable but we loved the hotel and the staff and where it is situated.

Lovely hotel we had a great stay the staff were very friendly and helpful .The breakfast was very good and was included in the price We stayed in a small standard room at the very top of the hotel and thought for us it was just a bit small i will stay there again but would pay a bit more for a bigger room But the location is brilliant close to the minster and all the lovely shops

I wouldn,t say did not like but found the room very small and the bathroom was very narrow but we only stayed for two nights so really did not bother us that much i knew what we were getting when i booked

The location is fabulous in the centre of York, a 3 minute walk from the Minster. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are very pretty, clean and comfortable. The've paid great attention to detail, so the entire hotel and restaurant have a really beautiful and cohesive look. The breakfast is table service rather than buffet and is excellent! You really are spoilt for choice and there are options for guests who are vegan or those who are lactose or gluten intolerant. Great coffee.

As the location is very central, those who are sensitive to noise will probably pick up the odd car at night but it's nothing crazy. The bed for my personal preference wasn't super comfy as I could feel the springs a little, but in spite of that, my friend and I absolutely loved our stay and would happily come back. 10 out of 10 recommend.

Brilliant location for city centre, everything can be walked in under 10 mins.

Maybe I misunderstood, but don't think the car access was made clear. We were told by hotel that they had no parking so would have to park at a remote car park. However they didn't say there was no car access to the property, had planned to drop my 85 year old mother in law at the hotel then park but this is not possible as road is blocked by bollards. My mother in law struggled with the walk, it was a good job my father in law decided not to come as there is no way he would have managed that walk.

The location is superb, so close to the Minster and the Shambles. Breakfast was very good with plenty of options including vegetarian. Our room was comfortable although very small and we loved the huge walk-in shower.

As I have arthritis in my knee, negotiation of stairs can be tricky and uncomfortable. Although we were allocated a room up just a small flight if steps, the last few were difficult as they were similar to a spiral staircase. Going up was ok but coming down was a bit precarious. The lighting in our room wasn't great as the bulbs were quite dim. I struggled to read when the curtains were drawn.

Well located. Cute and cosy. Lots of character. Bathroom has recycled furniture fittings for sink and toilet, very creative. Our room was in the roof so quirky and sweet. Super clean and terrific staff. Breakfast included was above and beyond- not buffet. Sit down and order. We also enjoyed a lunch and dinner there. 2 minutes from the Shambles, Cathedral and handy to everything. Most importantly the mattress and pillows were perfect. We had the best sleep!

Brighter light in the bathroom and a mirror over the sink would be great. All lights throughout were the warm dim bulbs so it was difficult to do things like apply make up or shave etc.

Property is in the most ideal location for access to all of Yorks treasures! If it’s quaint, traditional and ye old English that you’re looking for, this is the place for you. Staff were lovely and the food was impeccable.

We were in room 15 on the top floor, glad we were only staying for one night as the trek up is a steep one. Although the staff readily offer to carry your bags. Due to its location, the nearest car park is around a four minute walk okay for us but something others may need to, be aware of. Not really “don’t likes” more the heads up.

The Galtres is an old building right in the centre of the city. The Shambles is just around the corner. The rooms are so quaint, and the lodge has been decorated beautifully. The staff were very friendly and allowed us to leave a small suitcase at reception after we checked out so that we could do a bit more sightseeing before driving home. The breakfast was delicious, chefs kiss! We had the Full English and I’d definitely recommend. A couple of tips for anyone wanting to stay in York: we used the park and ride so that we didn’t have to park in the city. We parked our car at Askham Bar Park & Ride, it’s free and secure. Then we took the bus into town with a one way single ticket, which cost around £3 each. York is quite small. We managed to walk the whole city around 3 times in 24 hours. I can recommend the City Sightseeing bus. Your ticket is valid 24 hours and you have an audio guide, so you can learn interesting facts about the city and its history. The day we went it was pouring with rain, so we decided to go and watch a movie at the Everyman cinema. That was lovely, very small with couches and service at your seat. We stopped for a Guinness at the Tank and Paddle. It’s expensive there but you have a great view of the river and if there’s a special sports event, you’ll be able to catch it on one of their 20 TVs dotted around the restaurant. We had cocktails and food at The Slug and Lettuce. Everything was amazing, I would go there again next time. The Shambles is the oldest street in York and so pretty! We wanted to grab a bite to eat before exploring further and stumbled upon a street-food-esque shop called Shambles Kitchen. You get pulled pork sandwiches, among other things. Highly recommend! And how can we forget Bettys? A stunning tea room situated in the centre of town. You’ll need to book a table in advance if you don’t want to stand in a mile long queue.

There was a bit of water damage on the roof, which made the paint splitter away. Due to the old windows, it is quite loud at night. The booking was £20 more expensive with Booking.com, which I only discovered afterwards.
