The rooms are huge, clean, and comfy. The onsen experience is really good too, as with the meals provided. Great value for money. Small suggestion for improvement: perhaps some information on the available transport options could be sent to guests in advance. There are basically 2 options: (1) take Shuttle A (¥200/person) > alight at Hotel Okada > walk the sheltered path on the 8th floor to Hakonenomori, (2) take Bus K (fare is distance-based, covered under the Hakone Free Pass) > alight at Oku Yumoto Iriguchi > walk ~5min to Hotel Okada > walk the sheltered path on the 8th floor to Hakonenomori.

Onsen, Ryokan Style

The Hotel should give more Information about how to get there. There is an orange Bus driving Direct to a Hotel next to this one and there is a short cut though the other Hotel to come to this one without having to pull all your luggage up the step Hill. Check my photos with Google translator for instructions.

Generously sized room, beautiful view of the valley all the way down to Odawara and the sea, wonderful facilities particularly the extensive onsen with different options for heated pools indoor & outdoor - a special experience sitting in the rock pool up a level, surrounded by forest and with snow falling down. Hotel staff were also very helpful and welcoming.

Google Maps will try to lead you right to the top of the hill, so would be good as part of the booking to advise that if you're arriving on foot (walked from the train station, though there is a shuttle), you can make your way through the hotel entrance further down (marked on map as Hotel Okada, with the upper building marked as Hakonenomori Okada), using the elevator and escalator to easily reach the top. Thankfully we did discover this on the first day.

Friendly and helpful staff, good sized room, exceptional onsen facilities. Air conditioning was powerful and effective. Close to centre of town. Easy check in and out process. Pricing reflected quality.

It wasn’t a big deal to me as we spent most of our time wandering around town and day trips but be aware it does look dated and tired, even though we stayed in a renovated room which we paid extra for. To reiterate what most people have said, the location is walking distance from town on a cool day but if it’s hot don’t bother - get a taxi and save yourself the trouble and time. Same goes for if you are wheeling suitcases. The plus side is there are plenty of taxis about and they are very cheap.

Size of room was good, room was clean and everything worked. Onsen was really nice. Breakfast and dinner which were part of the package were very good.

Futons were very thin, we had to ask for additional bases to make the futon acceptable.

The Japanese-style ryokan was clean and the experience was pleasant. The Onsen was zen and well-appointed. We loved the massage, manga and video games rooms. The restaurants offered some Western options and the waiter was very friendly.

The infrastructure is getting old. The hotel reception was mediocre. A curt welcome in incomprehensible English. The place is quite far away with a mountain to climb. I highly recommend taking a taxi to get there, it cost us 1000 yens from the train station. For the departure, there is a shuttle, but the instructions from the reception to take it are really not clear. We finally found the stop, it was complicated. Calling a taxi in the morning took 1 hour of waiting. I simply recommend walking back to the station, it takes around 20 minutes and is easy to do.

The area was a quiet and relaxing one. The onsen was super relaxing and so were the massage chairs (free of use), that was a really nice final touch after the onsen 😊 The beds were extremely comfortable. The breakfast was tasty, and contrary to what I read in previous comments, there are a few « western breakfast items » (2 types of cereals, mini croissants, mini (soft) breads with jams, not much but already something). Also poached eggs.

The access is not the best, it is uphill and the last shuttle bus to get there - on weekdays at least - is at 5.45PM. Be aware that even taking the shuttle and the shortcut via the lift of hotel Okada, there is still a one minute uphill to do by foot afterwards. But then again, it is also thanks to that that you benefit from the remote environment with a nice view. For the shower and the onsen you only get a little towel and a medium one, no big one, so if you prefer a big bath towel you should bring it. The breakfast - although good - was exactly the same on the 2 days I stayed there, it could be nice to introduce some variety for people staying more than one night.

We purposely booked this hotel to experience a traditional ryokan as part of our 2 week visit to Japan. Hakonenomori Okada did not disappoint. The room we stayed in had 2 beds and space for another 4 futons. The traditional kaiseki dinner was amazing and the indoor and outdoor onsen was an experience to remember...especially taking a dip when the temperature was 6C. The breakfast was average but the view from the dining room was spectacular. I would also like to mention that the receptionist helped us arrange to ship our luggage to our next destination.

The hotel is a little out of the way, up a very steep road away from the main road. Getting here from the train station is a 40 minute walk but we got a taxi to the hotel which cost only 900 yen. Money well spent.

Everyone enjoyed the onsens. We stayed in a family room and both the beds and futons were very comfortable. The view from the room was lovely. The staff were very obliging and offered to provide a late dinner to our son & his partner who were travelling to Hakone after work from Tokyo. The dinners were different each night of our 2 night stay which we appreciated and our specific dietary requirements were catered for. We thought the rates were good value considering both breakfast and dinner were included in the price. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The shuttle bus was infrequent and it was a challenging walk up the hill to the hotel. We used a taxi the following day. The breakfast was just ok.

The open-air onsen is the top feature of this ryokan. We went after the sunset and we could relax while contemplating the starry sky. Oh, it also includes beauty products such as face tonics or body milk that smells amazing, which is a plus. The room was spacious and clean, even if it's noticeable that the place is a little old. The people from the reception and the restaurant were very kind and helpful.

The location is a little far from the train station. Fortunatelly, part of the walk/hike can be avoided if you enter Okada hotel and use their elevator (that's also one of the recommendations from the receptionist).
