I stayed for 3 nights. The Shipwrights is a pub/B&B/restaurant, popular with locals and nautical types. it's located in a very pretty and peaceful neighbourhood. It's conveniently placed between Salamanca, (bars restaurants and markets and a short walk to the quayside in Hobart) and Sandy Bay with it's jetties at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. The food was very good, I ate at the bar and in the restaurant and found both to be very good. Breakfast can found a short walk at the Jackman and McRoss Bakery, which I would highly recommend. Upstairs, the rooms are basic but comfortable and clean. There is a guest lounge and a kitchen which was unexpected but welcome. the one corridor has toilets and showers on it, which were fresh and clean. The staff were very good, friendly, and remembered you. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar, listening to the banter of the locals and watching the cricket on the 2 TV screens. They had a good selection of beers and ciders. I would recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment.
In and ideal world I would have preferred an ensuite toilet and shower but, that would require a huge redevelopment and the the cost would have to reflect in the room rate, It was clearly stated that it was a shared bathroom before I booked the room, and I'm only saying this because I had to say something.

My partner and I stayed for two nights in the budget queen room. We honestly had a fantastic experience. We booked a room without our own bathroom, but there were three shared bathrooms/toilets so we never had to wait. The facilities and rooms were very clean, newly renovated and decently sized. There was a small kitchen with complimentary tea and coffee, cereal, milks, bread and Vegemite - perfect for a light breakfast in the little sun room. The building was quaint and historical with an old fashioned pub downstairs as well as a more modern restaurant area. The manager was extremely friendly and accommodating. He made us feel very welcome. We had a couple of fantastic salads in the restaurant downstairs on our first night after a long day of travel (we had already eaten earlier). The Inn is conveniently located in Battery Point, which is a gorgeous little neighbourhood set back a little from the waterfront. If you are walking from the waterfront, it's a little bit uphill but is no problem unless you have mobility restrictions. When we were there (early November), there were so many roses blooming which pleasingly scented our walks.
Nothing, really, but if I could make a suggestion, perhaps hooks or a towel rack in the room would be helpful.

Our budget room was above the bar so we had some lovely jazz until around 11pm which was not at all disruptive. The room was recently renovated and we were in Room 9 which is right next to the shared bathroom (no sounds through the shared walls). Breakfast was continental style from the kitchen on the same floor and had loads of bread for toast, condiments, full cooking facilities.
No coat hangers in the room. No room in the bedroom to hang our towels (lucky we only stayed the one night) and we didn't feel hanging these in a communal bathroom was appropriate. Not enough mugs for tea but that's being very picky!

Gorgeous building in quiet residential area. We organized our late arrival with them and they allowed us to order before the kitchen closed for the night, which was very much appreciated. The food was excellent. We didn’t have breakfast because we made an early start but there was plenty to choose from. The staff were very welcoming and made us feel comfortable right away. The building has been renovated extensively, and our room was very modern. I was expecting rooms that were dusty and creaky (which I also like) but it was definitely not that. It was so clean we felt like the first guests to stay.
The walls are quite thin so we could hear people in the next room coming and going all night, but it’s an old building so that’s understandable.

An excellent location and the rooms are very clean, comfortable and all you need. I particularly liked the cute kitchen area that was well-stocked, especially as I had to leave at 4am. I'd just come from power cuts in Cygnet, so it was great to recharge devices, access wifi and get warm too. I appreciated the reception manager carrying my cases up the stairs when I arrived and also letting me check in a little early. The small lounge area has beautiful views - if you can get in it!
An extra blanket in winter would be good. It was tricky with two heavy suitcases to move them quietly up some stairs then down a flight of steep stairs to leave at 4am. There does seem to be a lift but I don't know if it's just for people in wheelchairs. The small lounge is lovely and I was enjoying sitting there until a succession of staff members took it over. I know people need a quiet break between shifts, and I have worked in hospitality, but it was difficult for guests to have access. There is some noise from below - there's a stairwell leading up to the rooms - it was a good jazz band when I was there but expect some noise.

The location. The front bar. We have visited this wonderful old hotel many times over the years and the atmosphere is always happy and welcoming. We have met a number of locals and continue to return to catch up with them.
This is the third time we have tried to stay at the pub and each time there is confusion about the reservation to the point of not having any record of it all on one occasion. The staff take no responsibility. While we were in the front bar there was a goup of three young men enjoying themselves. I believe one particular staff member acted irresponsibly by serving them 3 shots each at one time. Needless to say, one young fellow was very much worse for wear. Didn't cause a problem but not nice to watch. I hope this issue has been addressed.

Very comfortable bed in decent sized room. The communal bathroom was very clean and never in use when I needed it. The kitchen area, where tea, coffee, milk and basic breakfast items were provided was a real bonus on the 2nd morning when I had to leave relatively early. My pre- booked taxi didn't come on check-out and the young man on reception drove me to my bus stop so I didn't miss it! All in all, a really good stay. I highly recommend it and may go back later this month.

I felt safe, it was clean, bed was comfy, very quiet most of the time, restaurant below serves great seafood chowder. Continental breakfast and parking were a bonus. Loved the location and the ambiance of Battery Point.
A few things were a bit tatty eg chairs in the kitchen, skirting board in women's bathroom. I couldn't get my key to open the door leading to carpark from inside (it worked coming inside from the carpark though).

dont eat breakfast. loved the family suite, recently renovated so the Spanish barman told me. Great bathroom too.
VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT NOW THAT YOU ARE ASKING... THE WINDOWS IN THE KITCHEN AND LOUNGE HAD BEEN PAINTED SHUT. MY BEDROOM WINDOW WAS ALSO ESTAPOL PAINTED OVER THE SILL. WANTED TO GET A HAMMER AND A WEDGE SHAPED TOOL TO BREAK THE SEAL ! I CLOSED DOOR FOR PRIVACY BUT THEN HAD NO VENTILATION OVERNIGHT WHILE I SLEPT. FORTUNATELY THE CORNER BEDROOM, THE BATHROOM AND THE THIRD BEDROOM WINDOWS COULD BE OPENED. THIS PROVIDED A WELCOME AERATION WHEN WE FIRST ARRIVED.

Really enjoyed the heritage character and bar downstairs, had a couple of drinks at the jazz nights with my partner!, The shared bathroom facilities had nice separation and cleanliness. shared kitchen was nicely stocked aswell.
Not to a fault of the hotel operators but while the restaurant/bar downstairs is operating, the sound travels up quite loudly through the floor but it the sound does die off by 10-11pm. Would recommend earbuds if you're an early sleeper.
