Location and setting great and surprisingly better internally than we expected having viewed from the road in the previous month. Exterior could be enhanced and paintwork, roof and guttering etc freshened up. Good bar area and dining area with good views and comfortable seating in both the restaurant and the extensive seating areas. Internal fittings and furniture and curtains and shower really good. Great walks available from the doorstep including immediate access to Cat Bells.

Not too keen on the cattlegrid in the access/ entrance and outside would benefit from some enhancement but not that much of an issue.

Location is absolutely gorgeous, the view from the dining room really gave things a luxury feel at breakfast. Nicely decorated too. I felt breakfast was pretty good, the food was fine with a nice selection. The breakfast service was very attentive, staff were friendly and very classy. Lots of natural light in the room and a very comfy bed.

Despite the modern fixtures being great, the bathroom was perhaps a little small in comparison to the room but it wasn't a major concern. Also minor but perhaps more vegetarian substitutes for the full cooked breakfast but honestly there was enough customisation on the dishes and a good selection at the buffet too where I didn't feel like it was a big deal not having fake bacon etc. Only minor stuff really very pleased overall.

Location was stunning in the Borrowdale Valley. Breakfast choice was excellent and all cooked choices were freshly cooked and served at our table. All Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel did not have a corporate feel which was good.

Electric car charging was via an app to the outside contract provider. The app was slow to set up and a lengthy period of time for it to actually work and start. Others on site I spoke to had the same issue. Not acceptable. Charging should be plug/pay/startwith no need for apps and delays.

The location was beautiful, also such a good idea to put bird feeders outside the restaurant window. Kept lots of diners occupied. Breakfast was very nice , although on our last day our order was totally confused.

Part of the issue with an older property is that sometimes the layout isn't logical. We did find it a bit of a maze using the stairs for the first time. Also on a personal note I found the public rooms too hot.

Gorgeous hotel. When we arrived, we were told our room had been upgraded for free to a superior room with a balcony. Couldn't fault anything. Great night's sleep. the bed was so comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and you could tell it was locally sourced bacon and sausage, we didn't have an evening meal but that was only because it was such a short stay and we had a couple of restaurants we wanted to try. Will definitely be going back :)

Brilliant location in Borrowdale. Very warm welcome. Its a small hotel and so it feels friendly. The location means its quiet, away from the main road in the Borrowdale and also means you can walk the fells from the door, or to the lake, or around the lake, or to Keswick. Our room faced south and had magnificent views towards the mountains. The room was very quiet and was very recently refurbished to a high standard. Dinner was fantastic and definitely worth booking - 2 or 3 courses. Great wine by the glass and without paying a premium. We relaxed in the spacious lounge before and after dinner while the staff served us aperitif and then coffees.

It is in a stunning location with gorgeous views. The staff were exceptional (Marilyn in particular). Breakfast and evening meal were great. The atmosphere was peaceful.

The room was very hot (in October) which meant we had to open the windows and this led to a lot of blue bottle flies and a wasp entering the room - around 8 flies over the 2 nights. There were no cocktails available at the bar, albeit the lady said the cocktail maker was on holiday.

Quiet location surrounded by beautiful scenery. Our room was lovely - spacious, clean and well equipped with a very comfortable bed and great shower. Public areas were well appointed and very nicely decorated for Christmas! Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. We didn’t have dinner at the hotel but other guests told us it was very good. All staff we met were friendly and helpful. The hotel has a drying room which we made use of during our stay as it never stopped raining! All in all Borrowdale Gates is a great place to stay.

There was nothing we didn’t like!

The food, dinner and breakfast were of the highest standard - quite beautifully presented and delicious with a wide choice of options and even a separate vegetarian menu. All the staff were friendly without being intrusive and very efficient. The room was relaxing and the bed very comfortable. All this for a very reasonable price.

A very small thing and probably personal to us, I would prefer a mug for tea in the room to the cups and saucers.

Great property! Helpful and friendly staff. Both continental and cooked to order breakfast included. Just a short drive outside Keswick and near other activities in the lakes region. Lift in the hotel will be appreciated by anyone with mobility concerns. Excellent choice for gastrophiles with a five course dinner being served in the on-site restaurant.

A safe in the room would be a nice addition. Also, small plates in bar when you’re not up for a five course meal.
