This is my first ever ryokan experience and I loved it. This property itself is a historical site so if you are an architectural nerd you will enjoy exploring it. Staff are so nice and the breakfasts were great. I regret didn’t book their dinner in advance. There are two public onsens for women and men. The onsen is pretty small, about 1.5x size of Canada common bathtub. But during my 2 days of stay, I didn’t need to share it anyone. I felt like the mordenization/renovation of this ryokan is done in Showa period, so it’s has a nostalgic feelings on top of an even more nostalgic feeling, which was very interesting. It changed my mood completely that even affect my itineraries. Every day you get a new set of yukata, I like how it feels. I can’t say enough good things about them. High recommend.

I wish there is a kettle in the room, the tea is not enough so I felt thirsty in the night. But not a big deal.

Sumiyoshiya was one of highlighted stays of my recent trip to Japan, and remains memorable even amongst our other stays in Hakone. The ryokan is located quite conveniently right beside Omicho Market, and a brisk walk to Kazuemachi/Higashi Chaya, and Kenroku-en. Walking into the reception imbues you with a sense of serenity. We were greeted by a gorgeous 床の間 (tokonoma) and Sumi-san, whom was courteous and polite from the moment we first arrived at the inn. Our room was spacious and came with its own bath, but we opted for the public gendered baths anyway. It was a quiet season, hence we both had each to ourselves at night. Breakfast was satiating with well grilled salmon, a sunny-side up, various tsukemono, vegetables and melon for a sweet finish. All in all, I could not imagine a better place to stay in Kanazawa if you're after a traditional ryokan.

Our hostess was wonderful! She was attentive yet not intrusive. For the rest of our trip we kept talking about the hospitality we experienced here and how all our other accommodations do not compare. We had both dinner and breakfast and everything was amazingly delicious. The room also had an attached modern bathroom with a shower. It was the perfect blend of traditional hospitality with modern conveniences. We wish we could have stayed more than two nights.

Our BEST stay in Japan! The staff were the kindest, the ryokan was so clean and cozy! Everything was just perfect - to the welcome tea and cookies to all the amenities. Would highly recommend to include breakfast in your stay as the traditional Japanese breakfast was so good! Would definitely stay here again for a long time the next time we visit! And to the staff, thank you so much for taking such good care of us! ( they wiped our luggage as it was raining, got the luggage up to our rooms, provided us with umbrellas for roaming and even dried our shoes once we were back!).

Sumiyoshiya is lovely ryokan with a lot of attention to detail. The host is warm and welcoming. Our room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. They had readied our room ahead of the usual check-in time, which we really appreciated. Their location in the city is great and we walked to most of the main sights. The shared hot tubs (separate for men and women) at the ryokan are well set up and relaxing. We're vegetarians, so we had to opt for the continental breakfast - it was hearty and of excellent quality. Our experience at Sumiyoshiya was so unique and comfortable that we'd prefer it to a hotel anyday.

We really loved this place. The room was very wide and comfortable, we definitely had one of our best nights of rest here. They have a private "sento" for all of the guests and it was an incredible experience. The location is amazing, just a couple of blocks from the Omicho market.

We only got to stay one night since this is a very booked place and they only had one day available. We would have loved to stay longer and we will definitely go back if we can.

Things we will not forget 1) The structure, especially the room and the small private onsen inside the structure (both are proof that staying in a ryokan is an absolutely MUST DO once in a lifetime experience!!). 2) The lady at the reception (I guess she was the owner). She speaks good English but above all she helped us promptly throughout our stay, suggesting good places to dine and helping us book guided tours (in Kanazawa several attractions require telephone reservations). 3) The breakfast. You can choose between the continental one and the traditional Japanese one: during our two-day stay we always opted for the second and we didn't regret it.

It is close to Omicho Market and public transport and shopping. The train station is walkable but there are many buses which can get you there faster. It is a small ryokan and very personal. Mie Sumi was my attendant—she greeted me, served me meals, answered my questions, set up my bedding, and saw me off. The food was tasty and filling. The bath was large enough for three or four but I was alone while bathing. There is a separate bath for each sex. It was very quiet even though the main street was very close. I thought it would be a great introduction to learn about ryokan through this property. Mie spoke English very well. The price for 1/2 board is far lower than anything you can find elsewhere. The experience is invaluable.

Rooms are upstairs but I think most ryokan are like that.

I loved everything about my stay at Sumiyoshiya. The staff is so nice and speak fair english, always ready to help you with anything you might need. The Japanese breakfast was delicious, everything was clean, they prepared my futon while I was away walking around the city, AC worked just fine, and the place actually looks so so nice!! Anyway, I genuinely couldn't find a single thing to complain about.

Nothing really. Even location is really good, as it is in the middle of the city center and close to most major tourist attractions.

Nice location, nice price for value, lots of space. Very clean, bathroom large for washing a little small for the rest. Not a lot of decorations but definitely suggest for the price instead of a western stay.

Lack of some decorations when compared to more expensive ryokans. Consider you will not have many surfaces that are not on the floor for taking out stuff from you luggage. Breakfast was traditional which for a western taste could not be suitable to everyone, but there's the central market at a 2min walk + Starbucks anyway.
