We received a warm and friendly greeting when we arrived. All the staff we encountered during our stay were friendly and helpful. Our room was larger than I expected, well equipped, comfortable and clean. St George's Guest House felt very "homely", there were pleasant touches such as fresh flowers placed around the entrance hall, a supply of snacks and drinks with an honesty box and a constantly replenished supply of tea, coffee, milk etc which guests could just help themselves to if running low in their room. The breakfast was wonderful, we only had it on one morning as for other days we had plans to have breakfast at various places in town. We were made to feel very welcome and I will certainly have St George's uppermost in my mind for my next visit to York. The location was great for us. We were driving to York and didn't really want to drive through the city centre as I know that traffic congestion can be bad - not a criticism of York, it's the result of a key appeal to the city - its medieval street layout and the existence of the city walls. St George's is just a short walk away from the city centre, maybe 20 minutes or so. Google Maps shows a walking time of 26 minutes from St George's to Coppergate for example and I do find that I walk a bit faster than Google Maps expects. At St George's we were able to arrive and park up without having to deal with city centre traffic and there was ample parking on the street near the guest house. There is also a small, private car parking area at the rear of the accommodation for which you can opt to pay extra if you really want that. It can be difficult to find accomodation within the city walls which offers parking and even if you do then you still have to deal with driving around the city centre - something I would rather avoid. For those not wanting to walk there are regular busses along Tadcaster Road into town.

I really can't think of any negatives for us at St George's Guest House other than the fact that we were only there for 3 nights. I would have liked to stay longer.

The property is well furnished and spotlessly clean. The staff clearly care about comfort, the rooms were lovely and warm and there was even an extra heater in the wardrobe for if we got cold. The staff couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. We had a cooked breakfast one morning which was freshly cooked and tasted amazing, really set us up for the day. Being able to book a car parking space really took the pressure off finding road or city centre parking which made our trip much more relaxing too. We would stay again for sure.

I can't find a bad word to say about this place really. If I really tried I could say that it is about a 25 minute walk from the City Centre which some might not like but I did, as I strive to get my steps in , but there are buses and taxis aplenty so not really an issue and if you are driving there is off street parking to the rear of the building at no extra cost. For an extra £15.00 on the room price you can get a cracking full English breakfast which will easily keep you going until late afternoon. Cereals, fruit etc etc are also available, and all the coffee and Yorkshire tea your heart might desire. The room was clean and well cared for The lady I mainly dealt with on site is absolutely lovely. I wish I could remember her name but despite labouring in a hot kitchen during a heat wave and performing a whole range of other duties seemed unflappable, cheerful and enthusiastic, loved her to bits.

I'm supposed to write 2 or 3 sentences about what could have been better here apparently. I can't really. It was all absolutely fine. There are my 3 sentences

It had a homely feel as soon as you walked through the door. The room was spotless. We opted for breakfast and I cannot fault the service and food. The staff were amazing from our arrival to departure we were greeted and everything explained. I like the extra touch of the “tuck shop” there was an honesty box if you wanted to buy anything. Fantastic location, a short walk into the centre.

Cannot fault

Immaculately clean room and dining area. Location really good for access to York old town, shops restaurants and surrounding areas such as Harrogate and Knaresborough. Alison (bright and cheerful host) was very welcoming and helped us to settle in and sign posted us to areas to visit and places to eat. Very well organised establishment in quiet location close to York race course, no noise. if we go to York again we would definitely book again, thanks Alison , Simon and the gang.

Can not think of anything.

Property is kept nice and clean all over and our room was spotless. Breakfast room had a nice homely feel with a freshly cooked breakfast served to you and good selection of other food & drink as well as self service. Great place to stay with a 10 minute walk to nearest bars and cafes and then just 5 mins into the centre itself.

Everything was fine

The managers (Fiona and Gage) and staff (Alison was the only other we met) were all very friendly and accommodating of any requests. They were extremely helpful with recommendations for things to do with the kids and places to eat. The kids loved the bunk beds and the huge king bed was so comfortable too. We had to get in touch with one of the managers late one evening because of an issue outside our bedroom and she was on-site within 5 minutes and the problem was sorted immediately, very reassuring as I was on my own with my kids. The breakfast was delicious and Alison was great company and full of chat! The guest house is walking distance to the city, even with younger kids, or there is a bus stop just round the corner. The perfect location to explore the city every day. I can't recommend this guest house highly enough. We will most definitely be back.

The shower might need a tweak to stop the water flowing out across the bathroom tiles (we used a towel to stop it getting too bad and it was saturated by the end of a shower) but this was a very minor issue and didn't cause us any problems.

Beautiful room, comfortable bed, clean, spacious. The friendly lady who checked us out - Alison. Quiet street. Close to bus stop - we could go into York city with ease.

Those uncomfortable low ceilings in the top room - husband kept banging his head. I know you can't change it about the room or house - thought to mention it anyway. Is there any way to pad it or hang tassels on it or something to prevent injury?

Exceptionally clean, large comfortable bed (king size) plus single bed. Beautifully soft, good quality bedding, well decorated and tasteful room. Excellent amount of tea, coffee, biscuits, with kettle and offer to help yourself to more from downstairs if you run out. Quiet location with street parking available and only took us half an hour to walk to main attractions. Very friendly host and lovely breakfast.

Nothing, perfect stay.
