- Don’t let the drab exterior neighborhood fool you. the interior is beautiful with tatami floors throughout - In-room onsen tub was great for private on-demand soaking - The reservable (no fee) outdoor private pools were also great especially on a cool night - Food was great

- Location wasn’t the best. It was a slog to drive to. - It was nested in a pocket of decrepit buildings. though it isn’t an issue if you’re just there for the onsen and not planning on leaving.

The receptionists, staff and service were very accomodating. The traditional Japanese Ryokan style was exceptional. The food serving during dinner and breakfast were exquisite. The highlight obviously were the private and public onsens that had natural spring water running all day! The fact it was winter time and snowing with views of the mountain vistas was tranquil and heavenly. That's becuase Yukimurasaki is 3,000ft above sea level and the clouds were touching the mountains.

Just wish I had more time to see Takayama. As I reserved it for one day. In the future I will add another day including to see the sights on the Shinhotaka Ropeway.

The staff and family members were absolutely fantastic. The dinner and breakfast were beyond expectations too - the chef/owner's creativity and craft was something we appreciated. The private onsens in our room were great with an awesome view of the mountains. The ryokan also allowed us to reserve the public rock- and cypress-themed onsens and these were enjoyable too! Our stay was really nice and comfortable. We would return again if we ever have the chance! Thank you for the great hospitality.

Just a super minor one - while we note the place is slightly old, it may be worthwhile fixing some of the wallpaper or paper doors just to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

This ryokan features both Japanese and Japanese-Western rooms. Our party had one of each, with both featuring two en-suite ofuro: one part of the usual shower/tub set up, open to the outside by windows, and a separate free-standing tub on the balcony. Water for both is directly sourced from the hot spring, and it often needs to be cooled off with tap water before use. Rooms comfortable, with great views of the mountains. River was low when we visited, but would be impressive after a big rain. Meals excellent—management made a point of doing an even better job on our second night. Irori (hearth) in lobby a nice feature.

There’s a road between the ryokan and the adjacent river, so occasional truck noise can be heard.

Absolutely love accommodations in the Japanese alps. We stayed in the rooms with our own private onsens in the room. Totally worth it. Gorgeous. The staff was lovely and super friendly. The food was absolutely fantastic. Wow. Such a lovely experience. The rooftop onsens were also outstanding!!

There is nothing bad about the Onsen. There are no stores next to the hotel. You would need to take the bus to get to other great places in the area like Hida Limestone caves or other amazing places in Takayama an hour bus ride away. But … really you are staying here to just sit in the natural hot springs and enjoy the lovely food they provide with your stay. Don’t try and do anything else.

We loved the mountain view and the overall experience and service. A little scary to be so far away from a major town/city but it was worth it. Above and beyond was the hostess who made us feel welcome and even helped plan our itinerary (in great English). We can't thank her enough because she made our stay feel much more comfortable. (Other points: They have a bus stop next to the location with a luggage friendly entrance. The bus is very reliable and came by once every hour according to the schedule. Our room had an indoor and outdoor private onsen. They had two private/family onsens on the roof (one stone one wood) that you can book a slot ahead of time. We are still thinking about the mushroom soup they served. We also recommend Shinhotaka Ropeway which is nearby. The nearest ATM is 3km away, if you are worried about cash but they accept credit card here as well - we bought additional sake for our dinner.)

The receptionist was really professional, kind and helpful. She made us feel like we are the most important people in the world. Private onsen (both rooftop and aparment one) were amazing, combined with spectacular view on mountains, it's gonna be thing we will remember for long time, real highlight of our trip. Dinner and breakfast were our of this world, so many servings of yummy food. I wish we had more time in our itinerary and could stayed here longer.

I liked everything, but if I should be nitpicking, then maybe the personal who handed us dinner didn't tell us how to prepare some things correctly (like beef steaks), but they helped us when we asked, really not a big deal.

Part of the reason for such a great experience was the customer service at the front desk. Tangerine (English name) who checked us in and out was so kind, made sure we knew exactly where we were going, answered all our questions and helped us book our bus back to Tokyo. They have a small staff so don’t expect 24/hr service but when they are there, it is great.

We visited in December and the lobby, common areas and restaurant were only heated during hours of meals so they were a bit cold but they provided blankets. The rooms were very warm and cozy!

• Outstanding bath(s) • Peace and tranquility • Relatively near the Shinhotaka ropeway • Welcome sweets were excellent • Evening meal was wonderful ... particularly the mountain trout which simply divine

• Lack of robes for the ... uhm ... larger person • The screen in our room had a hole in it .... • The local delicacy - the beef - did not match our taste • The towels were small and thin - they didn't match the luxuriousness that the price tag suggested

Location is beautiful! It's remote but that's part of the appeal. Bus services frequent and reliable, easy to navigate despite our limited Japanese. Room had a lot of charm as a traditional ryokan, private bath with view of the mountains delightful. Yukata provided and very comfy. Beds were comfy, room warm, everything clean. Dinner traditional keiseki style, so many courses and dishes. If you don't like fish you might not enjoy it, but a fun experience! Same with breakfast (less fish though). Staff were lovely to us too. We are a lesbian couple, we don't know if they knew but we didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Extras worth knowing: We were in mountain shirogane (しろがね) Pillows seem traditional and akin to a beanbag. Not necessarily uncomfortable but quite firm. If you opt for a room with a private bathroom, don't expect a shower cubicle. It's a sit-down onsen-style shower with a bathtub (full of hot spring water though!). Room nicely warmed but can be a little chilly in the hallways. Temp control in rooms too. Great view, but is on a road. Minimal traffic, however, and the balcony has a screen (for most of the railing). Hot water for tea and cold water for drinking provided as well as a tea set and some drinks in the fridge. We had two futon-style beds set up for us. To book the upstairs private rooftop onsen, they ask you a time to pick and which tub you'd prefer (there's wood or rock). We opted rock as we had a wooden tub on our balcony. Lovely! Great night's sleep!

Could do with a bit of TLC. Nothing really hindered our experience, but it is a bit worn. Visible wiring, we're unsure what to expect in the natural aging of wooden tubs, and the minerals from the spring water having an effect on the plastic indoor tubs, but there is some algae/discolouration/mineral build up. Again, lovely place, lots of charm, highlight of our holiday - just a little tlc would elevate it.
