This little hotel is the perfect place for a short stay in Miyajima . I left Kyoto in the morning for Hiroshima and after spending 3 hours exploring the Hiroshima Peace Park memorials, the Museum and the Loop Bus . After seeing all the main sights in a few hours all I took a local train 30 minutes to the island of Miyajima. This place definitely deserves an overnight stay and a much nicer place to stay than in the city of Hiroshima. I arrived early afternoon via a 10 minute ferry ride from the main land, walked 100m to the hotel and dopped off my luggage. I then headed directly for the free shuttle bus to the Mt Misen ropeway , buying my return tickets at the last shop on the left before taking the bus. At the ropeway entrance I then passed everyone in line and got straight onto the ropeway . Its 2 separate rides to the top of the mountain and then the best view is to the left as you exit the ropeway . After 15 minutes at the top I took the ropeway down the mountain. I then had time to visit both the Buddhist temple and the Shinto Shrine and by this time most of the day trippers had left the island so I could enjoy the Tori Gate without the crowds. At night its also illuminated ans early in the morning its also very mystical. Behind the small village is also a Cherry Blossom fairyland of pale pink flowers complete with deer quietly eating the blossoms that have fallen to the ground - this is also illuminated at night time. I was the only person enjoying the peacefulness of this magical secret garden early in the morning. The hotel itself is simple but has everything you need. Its safe, quiet, clean, comfortable, well located, affordable and has an onsen in the basement. My large room room had a view of the water, a small bathroom but there was also a larger shower room on my floor that was optional to use. I had a kettle, TV, PJs, toothbrush , hairdryer, and a very comfortable bed on tatami mats. The staff will happily recommend places to eat for dinner and serve a

We had a room overlooking the ocean wIth great views - with a balcony where we could sit and relax while enjoying the ocean and the sunset. The room was a traditional Japanese room with tatami and futon, which enhanced the experience! The location of the hotel was a mere 5 - 10 minute walk from the ferry, directly on the main road leading through town. On our way out the next morning, while at breakfast my wife asked a worker to fill her water bottle with hot water, which she gladly agreed to do. A few minutes later, forgetting about the water bottle, we left for the ferry. While sitting at the station waiting for the next ferry, the lady came running up (and I mean running) to return the now full water bottle. Needless to say the staff was great!

The Japanese style room was excellent - good amount of space and great view over the bay back towards Hiroshima. Location was near ferry, convenience store, restaurants, and common walking areas. The staff was always very kind and accommodating. The island itself is amazing!

They use a dual router setup on each floor for wifi, which results in spotty range and bandwidth. The public bath was very clean, but felt small and didn't have some extra touches like shower dividers or lotions. That said, I haven't experienced too many public baths, and may have too high of expectations from APA Hotels.

Staying in the traditional room in such a beautiful location was a highlight of our trip. The futons were so comfortable that we think ithey were the most comfortable beds of the whole trip. Our room had a balcony overlooking the sea. Everyone was very friendly there. They gave us a map of great restaurant recommendations. We had a shower in the room, but I also used the public bath downstairs which was very relaxing. We stayed two days and wished we could have stayed longer. The location is very close to the ferry terminal and the Tori gate. It’s also close to the only convenience store on the island (which was handy for snacks since most restaurants closed early.)

Nothing. Everything was great for us.

Our stay here was excellent from start to finish. The hosts graciously accepted our bags when we arrived early before our check-in time and ensured they were waiting in our room when we returned. We stayed in the top-floor room, which offered an incredible view of the floating Tori Gate. While the elevator stopped two flights short of our floor, the staff thoughtfully carried our luggage both upon arrival and at check-out. The room was airy, spacious, and well-appointed. The view of the Tori Gate from our window allowed us to perfectly time our visit before the crowds arrived, making for an unforgettable, peaceful experience. Sleeping on tatami mats was a highlight, adding to the authentic ambiance. The en-suite bathroom, though quaint, had everything we needed. We would absolutely stay here again—next time for a longer visit. We loved every moment!

We only stayed for one night this time, but we’ll definitely book a longer stay next year. We loved every moment!

Highly recommend staying here. We were 3 adults sharing a Japanese-style sea view room on the 4th floor. The room was spacious with comfortable futons and a lovely sitting area in front of the window with beautiful sea views. The bathroom area was clean and spacious (there were separate shower, toilet and sink areas but you could close the door to the bedroom to make the whole space a bathroom area). The location is excellent just a 5 minute walk to the ferry. Most places close early on Miyajima (even the Lawsons closes at 21.30!) so the staff very helpfully gave us a map on check-in with details of restaurants open in the evening. Staff were friendly and helpful. I highly recommend staying in Miyajima and staying in Hotel Sakuraya as it's excellent value for money, and it's definitely worth paying more for a sea view room.

We paid for the breakfast one morning but I wouldn't recommend it. I'd say you're better off buying breakfast at Lawsons or one of the cafe's nearby (there's a lovely bakery in the street behind the hotel) or even the Starbucks

The property is only a short walking distance from the ferry terminal which was a bonus after a long journey here. Very friendly staff. We stayed in the Seaview rooms which I highly recommend. Breakfast is 500 ¥ which you can book the night before and is a simple affair with coffee or tea, orange juice, toast with strawberry jam, salad and scrambled eggs. Spacious Japanese style rooms with tatami mats and futons.

Rather cramped bathroom. There is a public bath in the basement. Not the full service Japanese toilets we had become accustomed to unfortunately.

We loved staying at Sakuraya in Miyajima! I kept recommending it to everyone I met during my trip. It's truly a magical place, well worth an overnight stay—if possible, stay for a couple of nights. The property was clean and secure, and traveling with my kids, we all felt very safe. The staff were genuinely attentive and went above and beyond to ensure a wonderful stay. Highly recommend!

Honestly, there was nothing we didn’t like about Sakuraya. The location is fabulous and safe, and our room was clean and well-organized. The staff made sure we felt welcomed and comfortable. If you have the chance to stay here, don’t hesitate—you won’t regret it. It’s a magical place that adds something special to a visit to Miyajima.

This was the cutest hotel! We had a great time staying on the island with Sakuraya. The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and helpful sharing a map and information about restaurants that would be open for dinner since many things on the island close at 4. The view from our ocean view room was fabulous. We liked that this hotel was also close to the ferry and the shrine. The powerful A/C was also a major plus since it has been so hot!

The hotel did offer a small breakfast for a nominal cost, but I think an elevated continental breakfast would bump this stay to a full 10/10 for our group.

Easy walking distance to the Torii gates. Very large room with a big window overlooking the sea. Comfortable futons on the tatami floor. It's great to stay in Miyajima overnight to be there with no crowds, and to see the Torii gates at all times of the tides and in the dark, when it is illuminated. Ferry is very frequent. We took the more expensive ferry from the Peace Park in Hiroshima to arrive, which was a great very nice 45 minute trip on the water, seeing multiple islands etc.

Be aware that restaurants close very early. We bought a take out meal for dinner and ate on our balcony with a view of the sea, which was a nice solution.
