Nice hotel at a very convenient location just a few steps from Stephanplatz subway stop and around the corner from Collonaden pedestrian street with many restaurants, bakeries and cafés. The center of the city (Rathaus) is an easy 10 minutes walk. Very good breakfast, with vegetarian and vegan options, served in a double space where seating is always available. Comfortable bed, room of good enough size. Everything was spotless and it was cleaned daily. The kettle and various kinds of tea came handy. The 3 day card for subway and buses in the city was a nice touch and very useful. A young gentleman at the reception desk was very polite and willingly accommodated my request for a room change; he actually took me to see different rooms and choose for myself. I am very sorry I did not keep his name. I would happily stay in the Baseler Hof again and I have already recommended it to friends visiting the city.
I had booked a superior double room, which on the photos had a nice open view, worth paying the extra euros that came with it. Upon arrival, I was first given a room that was large (that's why superior, I guess), but facing an inner space where hallways and windows of other rooms looked and which had two adjasent twin beds (I prefered double), i.e. no view at all. Nothing could be further from the room photos. I requested a change and the new room was much better in terms of view but much smaller in size. As others have mentioned, there is some smell in the otherwise spotless hallways, but there was nothing in the room, so for me it was not a problem.

Location was excellent. We did not eat in the hotel. The bar area was good. Batman was friendly and it stayed open later than most places in the area which we found everywhere closed very early in 10.30ish. The room wasn't large but was very adequate with good storage, drawers wardrobes, hanging hooks. Plenty of plug sockets. Hairdryer in bathroom which had shower and bath. Very clean with room service every day. Extra pillows were provided on request.
It would have been helpful to have the reception better explain the restaurant timings menu etc. For breakfast and dinner, as we cannot read or speak German we found the signage wasn't very useful for menus etc. The view was poor over rooftops and air conditioning units but that did not bother us. There was very little to dislike about this hotel particularly given the cost.

The location was perfect for the opera and easy walking to main attractions, plus we were given a free pass to use on all public transport during our stay. The staff were super-helpful and friendly: the reception staff gave us excellent advice about what to see in the city and speak fluent Engish. Reception is in a welcoming lounge, with plenty of seating, a log fire and bar. The buffet breakfast is not to be missed: a superb range on offer, plus excellent coffee and great service! Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and we enjoyed our post-opera visit to the Weinkeller. All in all, this hotel couldn't have been better for us and we were really well looked after.

Excellent location with super friendly staff. Was easy to access lots of sites via walking or by using the free transport card provided by the hotel. Only a 50m walk to Stephanplatz station meant easy access to the whole city and the airport. Breakfast was excellent, and we also really liked the lobby area with with bar and fireplace. Would definitely stay again.
Travelling as a family of four we found the room a bit tight on space once the sofa bed was open. This was ok for a couple of night stay but wouldn’t have liked to be that cramped for a longer stay.

The hotel is on a major street next to the Alster pond. It is a short 10 to 15 minute walk from the main train station. The front desk always had a friendly knowledgeable person, who spoke several languages and had information on the local bars, shopping and restaurants, and even know about the local transportation. There were umbrellas on hand for loan in case the weather turned wet, which it did during my visit. The room was a large penthouse suite that I reserved on a whim due to a good deal offered on the price and it was large, roomy with a huge restroom, with a tub, and a dining area and living room with a chimney and ceiling to floor windows for a fantastic view of the city. The minibar fridge was fully stocked with a variety of beers, wine, soft drinks and numerous snacks, all free. Also included were a huge selection of coffee and tea. The shampoo, soap and lotion were of excellent quality. The bed was large and very comfortable. The bedroom had a large amount of closet space. There was a deck outside of the sliding glass window, but it joined with the deck of the adjacent room, which also had wall to ceiling windows. There are numerous bars, restaurants and shopping areas within a minute or two walk. There is an underground metro station just a 2 to 3 minute walk from the front door. There is an attached restaurant and a bar in the lobby with numerous couches and seats.
No air conditioning with temperatures in the 90s F. No iron in the room but they allowed guests access to the basement laundry area with an iron and an ironing board.

Good location close to the station and the lake in central Hamburg. The room was spacious and relatively quiet. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom, although small, had everything including a shower with good pressure.
The major problem was a lack of air conditioning, the room was like a sauna. But the fan offered did help at night. It is an old family owned German hotel and, whilst it has history, it is preferable if you speak German. There are no tv channels in English and English language programs are all dubbed in German, not subtitled. Books in the room are all in German, even one by Australian authors.

Localization was perfect! It is near some attractions and just a few meters away from a subway station. The hotel also provides a public transportation card for the guests. Staff were friendly and always willing to share information when requested. Our rooms were comfortable enough. Roof top bar is also a plus, with a different view from the city and a cozy atmosphere.
Just a minor incident with the small freezer in one of the rooms, which was not working. But when informed, the receptionist promptly offered to store our products in their freeze. And breakfast was a bit overpriced, in our opnion. We chose to book a room without breakfast and ended up eating by a cafe/bakery in the corner, which was good and affordable.

I hadn’t included breakfast but on my first morning ate in the restaurant. I enjoyed it so much there I are there for the next two mornings as well. I loved the lobby area where you could sit and relax at the end of the day and look out onto the street. Without exception all the staff were helpful and treated me like a valued guest.
During the night my room was a little too bright from lights that were permanently on during the night outside. I don’t think they were lights from the hotel itself but some curtains with a blackout feature might have helped.

Hotel location is great! Very walkable to shops, restaurants, cafes, parks, and public transportation. The hotel is not modernized completely so still has old European charm. Hotel staff was very nice and responsive. It was nice to receive a free ticket for 3-day use of public transport. Also, I came early for the check-in, hotel was able to hold my bags while I walked around the neighborhood to wait for the proper check-in time. The hotel was very clean. Bed was comfortable. The room was a good size for one person, two people it was a bit tighter. Bathroom was good, also small, but the water pressure was nice. The room also provided a fridge and kettle with tea. Wi-Fi was good.
Some things to improve, the towels were not of a luxury quality but were good. I prefer to have a bit more towels in the room, and the staff provided them right away when asked. The worst thing were the pillows. They were very soft, not firm at all, and for me not enough. Also, there is no air con. I was there on a particularly hot couple days. But, the staff again were able to provide me with a fan! Keeping the windows open at night was too loud when my room was on the city view side.

Lovely welcoming hotel. We were able to book a penthouse as this was a room for 4 people. Lovely to have a balcony. Beerkeller next door was as good as it was when we stayed here in 2008. We had returned to go down memory lane. We chose to not pay for breakfast and used the bakery at the end of the street. Staff in breakfast wished us a pleasant day every morning.
It is on a noisy road but we knew this from previous stays but the beerkeller was worth the sirens. Closest tube was closed but it was only 10 minutes to walk to the next station.
