We loved this traditional Japanese accommodation close to Takayama train station and all of Takayama's sightseeing spots. The traditional tatami room we had was spacious, clean and quiet. The beds were very comfortable. The onsen facilities were wonderful too. The staff were extremely gracious and polite.
We loved everything about this place. I only had the misfortune of sharing the onsen once with two other unruly guests who spoilt my onsen experience. It was unfortunate but absolutely not the hotel's fault. Two other guests decided to enter the onsen bath without first washing themselves. Then threw buckets of water from the hot bath out all over the floor area, screaming and shouting like it was hilarious. It was the most obnoxious behaviour I had the displeasure to endure. Please fellow travellers, educate yourselves on the etiquette and traditions of the country to which you're travelling to and be respectful and mindful of other guests, and have consideration for other people's property.

Facilities - A beautiful old building, the outside is charming and has a picturesque entrance. The layout is convenient and it is clean and well maintained. Rooms - the room we stayed in had a tatami floors but western style beds raised off the floor (only by a few centimetres). It had a small tv which only had local tv on it. The room is beautiful, with paper window shutters and sliding paper doors. There was a toilet inside and a basin in the entrance. Bath - the highlight. The bath is clean, and is perfect to come back to after a day of sightseeing. Staff - didn’t have much interaction, but the receptionists were extremely polite, as is standard for hotels in Japan, and the older gentlemen who showed us to the rooms was extremely helpful and polite. He brought our suitcases up in the service lift so we didn’t have to lug them up the stairs. Location - perfect, barely a 5 minute walk from the station, and another 5 minutes to the historic streets. Plenty of restaurants and shopping around.
The only negatives are to do with the buildings age, however it is to be expected. Some of the cabinets were looking worse for wear, and the doors to my room and bathroom were loose. The floors were also very creaky in a few places, especially the toilet, however there isn’t much to be done there. The showers are public, however I think most tourists, if it is their first time, will find it completely amenable after any preliminary discomfort.

A traditional Ryokan near the Takayama station, many restaurants and 10 min walk to the old town which makes it very convenient. The room was spacious and clean and the staff were very helpful and friendly, the common area gave you the japanese vibe you’re looking for in a place like Takayama, they have Onsen (Public Baths) but I did not use it, would stay there again.
The pillows were a little uncomfortable which made me wake up to adjust them a few times during sleep, but nothing major, staff didn’t speak English but they were always happy and patient to use translation apps

We arrived in a stormy day after Typhoon Kong-rey and the old lady took an umbrella and showed us where to park our car for free! Thereafter she even carried one of our luggage up a flight of stairs to our room! Wow! What hospitality! The ryokan is old but very well maintained. We have ample space to house 3 adults and the bathroom was kept very clean. It is also situated very close to Miyagawa morning market (a 5 minute stroll). The main shopping area is a 10 minute stroll and a good selection of Hida beef outlets. We will return to this ryokan if we travel to Takayama again!

This stay was one of my favorites during our trip to Japan. What made it so special was the attention to detail from the people at the reception. When we arrived, it was so cute to see our names on the banners outside to welcome us. I appreciated that, even though I have many tattoos covering my body, they allowed me to participate in the hot baths. They were very attentive and always present to anything we needed (umbrellas, adaptors for electrical sockets, extra towels, etc.). The location was close to everything, and since we did not have a car, it helped us a lot with getting around the area. When we checked out, they were so kind that they kept our bags till our next bus left in the afternoon. We spent only two nights here, but next time we wish to stay longer! Thank you for all.
Can't think of anything negative.

The rooms were spacious and spotless. Futons were one of the most comfortable that we have ever slept in. Staff were incredibly friendly. The onsen was good and very clean. We used the onsen about 6am and 8pm and it was completely empty, felt like we were the only ones (both male and female)! They were remarkable and a great experience. Location was perfect (5 mins to train / bus station) and super close to various restaurants, temples and other attractions. We would definitely return to stay here in our future stay at Takayama!

This is a real japanese style hotel, different from the other buildings around, from the street you wouldn't guess it's there, between all the other houses. It's small, it consists in the building itself and a small garden/entrance area that you can see in the picture - and that's it, there's nothing else. It's very old, I don't think it has ever seen a renovation of any sort (everything seems to be from the begining, the room phone is actually that one with the wheel!).There is an onsen inside the building. It seems to be a family bussiness, and owners very nice and present all the time.

The friendlyness of the staff and room decoration was top-tier. The onsen was great, very relaxing. When you walk onto the property, there will be a sign with your name on it, we thought that was a very cool detail! There are simple maps of Takayama available in the Lobby, the old man owner showed us some nice place to go to. It was very rainy our first day and we got complimentary umbrellas. We really loved everything about this place. Two small tips for 1st time visitors: 1 make sure you reserve a restaurant in advance! 2 bring a good coat or plenty of layers!!
The mattresses are a little hard but we didnt mind that. The restaurants all needed reservations in advance but that has nothing to do with Yama no Iori.

Hodakaso Yamano Iori is a wonderful Ryokan located in the central of Takayama town. The Ryokan run by a group of elderly and they were all really nice and polite! We loved everything about it. From the old building itself, traditional japanese style interior, our room was spacious, the onsen, the welcome drinks and snack, our name on the shoes storage area and outside the guest board were both really sweet. We stayed a good 6 days in it and wish to stay longer. Highly recommended! One thing to note as they don't provided washing machine and you have to walk 5 minutes away to get your clothes wash but it's really didn't bother us much. We just loved to take any chance to explore this little town Takayama.

A beautiful traditional stay in Takayama. An old hotel that doesn't feel dated, has a premium feel to it without the premium price tag. Good location, walkable from the bus station. Highly recommended.
A shared bathroom is uncomfortable for me (there is a toilet ensuite though so that was good.) Luckily I was able to wash and enjoy the hot springs by myself for a bit. You can wait until there are no slippers in front to go in but there's no guarantee when someone else will come in : )
