The food was amazing. Different Japanese breakfast every morning was intricate and delicious. The room was a great size and the beds were very comfy… the doonas were so fluffy too.

The walls were a little thin and we could hear our neighbours on each side of us, walking around, moving their suitcases and dropping things on the floor. But it is a traditional style inn with thin walls so we expected it, and the noise didn’t last long anyway.

We cannot recommend this place more. It is a lovely cosy place allowing us to experience traditional Japanese style environment and food. The staff here are the loveliest and so kind. They were extremely helpful and accomodating. Especially as one of us had dietary requirements. We are beyond happy with our stay. It is also located convienently near several popular must see places including the river, morning market, heritage buildings and traditional streets. They made our honeymoon extra special by just being themselves. We hope to come visit again in the near future. Thank you again to all the staff there!

We loved the Ryokan for not only was the staff friendly and helpful with us non-Japanese speaking tourists, but they also helped with tech issues we encountered. They also were accommodating with gluten free dietary options. The second we arrived we were greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. We made the decision to upgrade to a junior suite and it was lovely and large after the Toyko small hotel rooms. We were asked to wear kimonos around the facility and enjoyed it along with the traditional Japanese meals which were presented in lovely Japanese style dishes. You will not be disappointed should you stay. We changed our stay to 2 nights but in hindsight we would have done a third. And as a side note we were charged a small onsen or public bath fee. One morning we nudity shy Americans decided to try it and thankfully no one was there so it was amazing and very Zen. It is uber clean and relaxing. Go for it.

When we arrived, we decided to go out to dinner. The staff gave us a map and good directions but at night, with few lights and no Wi-Fi, and signs in Japanese we struggled. But we stopped a couple in a car who ended up giving us a ride to our restaurant called the Butchers pound which was amazing and delicious. We got lost on the way back, but we stopped a man on a bike who walked us back. So, the only problem that we had was lack of Wi-Fi walking the streets. Make sure you check with your phone company or get a portable Wi-Fi to assist with reading signs.

Our experience ar Ryokan Asunaro was exquisite. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted kindly and helped with our bags. Everything was explained clearly and we even got to choose our own kimono’s to wear inside the Ryokan during our stay! The room was spacious, very clean and nice and warm. The tatami beds were very comfortable to our surprise (first experience with them) and we enjoyed the onsens as well (seperate for men and women). The Ryokan itself was so cosy, it felt like walking into a home. When checking out, we were also helped with shipping our bags to our final destination, which helped a lot. Highly recommend Ryokan Asunaro!

We really enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Asunaro. It is just a short walk to the morning market and not much further from the old town. It's also fairly close to the train station which is nice. The atmosphere of the hotel is very cute. The staff was very welcoming and our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. I highly recommend you sign up for dinner for one night of your stay. The traditional Japanese style dinner was delicious and the presentation is adorable. This was one of our favorite Ryokan meals during our 3 week stay in Japan. Breakfast was also very good. We did both mornings of Japanese breakfast. Each time the food was a bit different and yummy. They offer American breakfast as well which looked good on other peoples tables.

Honestly nothing to complain about. Maybe could have been a bit closer to the old town but we didn't mind walking. We never tried the shared baths so I can't comment on those but I'm sure they were nice.

We had a wonderful stay at Ryokan Asunaro The beautiful surroundings and authentic Japanese experience will stay with us forever. The welcoming feeling at all times, the beautifully appointed rooms with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. The dining experience both at the Kaiseki dinner and the Japanese breakfast each morning was incredible. We have never experienced anything like it before.

There was nothing we didn’t like

We spent Christmas Day here. Very traditional, clean and welcoming. The photos on Booking.com did not do this place justice. Staff were helpful, and offered advice about the local market. How to use the Onsen and etiquette about shoes/slippers and provided traditional wear whilst staying at the Ryoken everyone wore them, regardless of nationality, which made the evening meal very special. The 13 course dinner was really a whole experience that we won’t forget. We opted for the Japanese breakfast, again beautifully presented with a lot of food. All food was produced locally which was great too. Lots of art and historical pieces to browse and staff happy to talk you through. Rooms were comfortable clean and traditional. We had room 311 which was a family room with a bedroom and matted area where futons were laid out for additional guests. The room was large enough for us to accommodate 6 adults for after dinner drinks. Was really close to the train and bus station and we caught the ski shuttle bus and went skiing for the day. Very much one of the best parts of our stay.

Ryokan Asunaro is a fantastic spot to stay in Takayama. The staff are beyond friendly and helpful, the food is excellent, and the bathing situation is nice despite it's smaller size. The staff also have exceptionally good English which makes it easy for people who haven't got the best Japanese. The staff went above and beyond to help us not only with our stay but also our luggage forwarding to the next destination. Most importantly we got an incredible restaurant recommendation from them which lead us to one of our best meals of the trip. On our first night our car rental fell through and so we had to take two buses and a train to get to the Ryokan, the staff were unflappable. They happily pushed our dinner booking back for us and were so welcoming when we made it. The Ryokan isn't in the centre of old town so don't expect that but it's easy walking distance from the centre of Takayama and from the train station. You'll find yourself walking all over Takayama rather than taking any transport and it's in a good spot to facilitate that. Also many comments have mentioned how this is more like an Inn than a Ryokan. Stupidly Ryokan is a Japanese Inn so I'm not quite sure what they mean by those comments. It's definitely a polished operation though and isn't as rustic as some other ryokan you will find. Also massive tip is to either get the Japanese breakfast or go to the markets. We did the Japanese breakfast and the tables around us who did the English one looked so envious.

This Ryokan is a very nice tradiotional Japanese experience from entry to check-out. The Ryokan and rooms are very nicely decorated with local furniture/art, which makes it feel like you are walking around in an old Japanese house rather than a hotel. Although this Ryokan can host quite some guests, that does not take away anything from the intimmacy whilst using the Onsen or eating in the shared dining room. The staff spoke good English, was very friendly, and the rooms were very spacious/clean. The dinner/breakfast experience, although being on the expensive side, were one of the highlights of our trip. The quality of the food was excellent, so we would definitely recommend booking these add-ons!

The walk from the train station might seem a bit far (approx. 10 mins), but it's a very easy/quiet road that's suitable for large suitcases.

Loved everything about this ryokan! The service was superb - so amazingly polite and courteous, food was stunning and spectacular, and the facilities were amazing - traditional with just the right modern touches. Easily the best place we’ve stayed at and one of the top highlights of our 2 week stay in Japan. I’m telling all of my family and friends they need to go here. Loved loved loved the cute town of Takayama. Excellent food and lovely mom and pop shops and beautiful temples
