The staff were so wonderful and friendly. The hotel was also kept warm, cozy and quiet. Perfect getaway location. It has a rustic feel which we liked. The food was delicious, and we can’t recommend the hida beef option enough.

They DO warn you that there’s no food and to bring your own. There is nothing for miles. BRING FOOD. They provide breakfast and dinner… with TEN HOURS in between without lunch. Either adding a lunch option or even a snack vending machine would have made this perfect. But we had to ration what we did bring which was a bit stressful.

Both the breakfast and dinner are very tasty and healthy with rich variety of food. It was quite nice to have your own onsen bath in your room. Pretty nice view both outside the room and in the third floor balcony where you can be surrounded by mountains and trees. Staff also very friendly and helpful, fluent in english as well.

The location is a bit far away so it took sometime for the bus to arrive. Plus recommend telling the bus driver to stop at Hoshi No Kanemae in advance. It would probably be quite tiring to walk uphill for 15 minutes from Nagao Kougenkuchi, but it was pretty nice to walk down there in the morning.

The room was exceptionally quiet and comfortable, with it's own onsen and a view of the woods. It felt very private. Breakfast and dinner were both good. Great location in the Japanese Alps, but it was definitely nice to have a car.

I rated this 4 out of 5. It is a great location for hiking and exploring the area around Kamikochi. 2-3 nights is great here. The rooms also had Onsen spring baths in them. The hotel is functional and perfectly comfortable. Two points to note: the staff are really nice but are not local to the area and can not help with organizing your itinerary or really making suggestions, so do plan beforehand and secondly the restaurant is quite limited. You have to order food in advance and it is traditional Japanese food that may not appeal to all Western tastes.

More choice in the restaurant for breakfast and some more vegetarian options for dinner.

If you want to calm down after some stressful city days, I think this is a great place to go. There may be newer or more luxurious options available, but I loved staying there. The hotel itself as a unique atmosphere. The village is very peaceful and not many tourists around when we were there. Valley kamikochi is very touristic on the other hand. There is a beautiful but challenging hike up Yake Dake you can start from the hotel. You can descend down to kamikochi or take the ropeway down same side as hotel. I’d suggest the ropeway. Staff is super friendly and they work very hard. I loved the private onsen and the condition of the hotel isn’t as bad as other reviews made me fear. The foyer spaces on each floor - to me - are some of the most beautiful hotel spaces I’ve ever seen.

I think you can feel the cost pressure operating the hotel, as they really want you to book some meals. There is a small store nearby and the „hikers in“ 20 minutes by foot serves nice food. so not really necessary.

Nakao Kogen Hotel Kazaguruma was absolutely amazing. I could not recommend this accomodation enough. My partner and I visited Japan for just over a week and visited many places but when we returned we honestly wished we spent the whole time here! the location was absolutely superb and the photos do not do it justice! It was even better in person. The onsen bath in the room was stunning and the food was exceptional in standard and value for money. Very helpful and incredibly kind staff. 10/10, we can't wait to come back!

There was nothing we didn't like! The accomodation was perfect. Serene location and the wildlife was beautiful!

The private onsen was the best part of the trip. It is on the deck and you can literally spend hours soaking in the nature. In addition, the staff was beyond lovely and were extremely helpful. They even offered to draw me a map of the different walking routes. The food was also amazing at the restaurant. The chicken and pork were good as well as the hida beef. Room is very spacious. It is traditional Japanese so there is no standup shower but does how the stuff for a good onsen soak.

Some people mention how it's a bit run down in other reviews. It didn't bother me and it was rustic. I was a bit worried about packing in my own food for lunch due to the remote location, but just stopped at the convenience shop beforehand and they had a mini fridge. This is perfect for a retreat and I loved the solitude.

Excellent value for money at this hotel in the mountains. I had the place to myself as a solo traveller and felt I was getting a great deal for a huge room and private hot spring bath looking out over trees with real hot spring water from the area. Private balcony in the room and all! Authentic Japanese breakfast and dinner and the host made the effort to change my advance order from fish to beef after I'd learned beef is a speciality in the region, and my god was it good. The hotel is slightly old fashioned in some of its design but I didn't feel that was a problem, and you would do best to have a car if you want to explore the area, but the hotel itself is right on a bus stop to Takayama so you can easily travel there like I did as a solo traveller getting public transport. Staff spoke English and were super attentive.

Excellent hotel. Location in a very quiet area is great and very close to the rope away. The hotel is big and very spacious; the rooms are huge, very clean and modern, with plenty of room, very comfortable beds, with private hot springs in each room. The bath room is set at the back of the room, with external/internal showers and external hot springs - amazing. The common areas are huge, with an outside decking overlooking the river and the mountains. We had supper on the decking; my son had fun using the hotels telescope and binoculars looking at the stars. Customer service is excellent; all features of the hotel are explained in great detail, a coin laundry available with plenty of parking. I highly recommend this hotel.

I loved this hotel. Yes it is a bit dated and could do with a paint job etc, but the value for money is phenomenal. Staff were lovely, room was huge, and the onsen in the room was amazing. The onsen is fed straight from an underground spring but you are able to adjust the temperature by adding cold water and it looks straight out to the Alps. Bed was comfortable by Japan standards. The meals provided were also excellent value and thoughtfully prepared. I would love to stay here again.

My only complaint is that there is no proper shower, only the onsen shower which is very low to the ground. I got a connecting bus to the hotel which was 20 minutes late, but I'm glad I waited for it as it is a steep, winding road that you have to walk to get to the hotel if you miss the bus.
