Nice location. Quite close to the subway. Good value for money. Nice patio. There was a big rat there at the patio but I am just gonna overlook that.

The second floor can really use more showers. They were all always full and you had to line up. The reception staff could be a bit more friendly. They appeared quite cold to me or I guess as I learned later in my trip, NYC folks are generally cold so maybe it is wrong of me to impose my Canadian customer-interaction standards on NYC folks. lol.

The hostel was clean and well maintained. It has a good security system and a nice kitchen. There is a huge common area. Location is 3 min walk from metro.

The staff was a bit rude. They don't try to resolve your problem or cooperate. They act as if they are doing some kind of favor by giving us the room. They are very famous and almost booked all the time, but it doesn't mean that they can't treat guests with respect.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The snack bar food was very good and had a nice variety, very convenient. I liked the international vibe to the facility. Location was great. Close to subway. It had many stores in the area. the entire facility was extremely clean.

Lack of privacy. I realize this is part of hostel life but... the website states that privacy curtains are provided but they are not. Had I known that I would have brought something to use for that purpose that worked better than the single sheet that was part of my bedding. A curtain is good not just for privacy but for blocking light and activity. The room was really too small for two bunk beds, especially with no privacy curtains. a good sleep mask and ear plugs are necessary. Also, the beds are very short. Im only 5 ft 2 and my head and feet hit the railings on both ends. I am guessing that the beds in male rooms must be longer but many women are taller than I am.

great location very close to the subway station, good value for money, staffs are friendly and volunteers are helpful, clean bathrooms and toilets, nice common areas

someone in my room didn’t follow the rule of quiet hours, she turns on the light and makes some noise at 1am. the rules should be made clearer when checking in.

It’s so convenient all well placed in the area, subway and buses very close. Loved the cafe inside helped a lot for me. Also very safe for women. I’m a solo female traveler and didn’t feel unsafe at any moment

The staff at the counter wasn’t very nice not a word not a smile not even a hello nor indications about anything about the hostel. Had to work it out myself. I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels and this one regardless of the activities proposed the staff isn’t helpful for you to feel included

The room had a card key for entry and a locker spacious enough for a 60L backpack, secured with a regular padlock that you need to bring. The air conditioner made the room cold when on, but the temperature was comfortable when turned off. There were two outlets near the bed (although one happened to be broken). You could use one of the four baths and four toilets on a first-come, first-served basis. One dryer was provided on the wall. The cleanliness matched the price, making it a great place to stay. What pleased me was the availability of a washing machine and dryer on the second floor, and the added convenience of being able to pay with Apple Pay for laundry. Just remember to bring your own detergent. The cafe near the lobby was relatively inexpensive but served delicious food. Additionally, there was an underground kitchen available, along with a large refri.ge、rator for those who prefer cooking themselves.

Stayed at HI Hostel NYC during my first visit to NYC for 5 days. Its location (Upper West of Central Park) could make you think it's less ideal if you're visiting NYC, and it's located <5min walk from a subway station, which gets you to central Manhattan in ~30min. (It's great if you don't want to be in the extreme business of Manhattan) On each floor there's several bathrooms that were kept clean. And communal spaces were kept clean as well. Inside the hostel they offer food (sandwiches, bagels, etc) although there is also a Deli across the street and a grocery store with all amenities <5min walk (at the metro station). In the basement they have a big communal kitchen which is well equipped. (2 large fridges and a freezer, multiple stoves, etc) Staff were friendly and willing to help. And they organize several events during the week (from social meetings 2x/wk), walking tours, and pub crawls. During my stay at Pride month, they also organized several Pride events and even a night going to a party in Brooklyn. The hostel offers yoga classes throughout the week and have a dedicated yoga/workout room. Thank you, HI Hostel NYC, for letting me use that space to do my own yoga practice! As my first stay was so pleasant on my way back passing through NYC, I stayed here a second time for one night and would recommend it if you're visiting NYC on a budget. (Either solo, small groups, couples, or families)

During checkin time, sometimes you have to wait a little if it's busy. During my stay the light and electrical plugs stopped working and it took over a day and a followup notice to get it fixed. (Staff mentioned to use the other plugs in the room which were not there. And they offered to move me to another room, which didn't seem ideal as I had already stayed there for several night and just had a couple left) There is only one elevator, so if you're travelling with (large) luggage it might take some time to get to your floor. The alternative is to use one of the two staircases (if you don't have a lot of luggage or can easily go up the stairs).

My stay at the hostel exceeded my expectations. The facility was clean, well-organized, and seemed recently renovated. The rooms were comfortable and equipped with lockers, curtains to cover the beds, reading lights, and plenty of charging outlets (including USB). The atmosphere was very friendly, and they even organized wonderful events for socializing! The location is very convenient (3 minutes walking from subway line 1, 10 minutes from Central Park, and near the charming neighborhood of Harlem).

I had to wait until 4pm to check-in, but the staff was kind enough to offer temporary luggage storage. The bar/restaurant located within the facility is a bit expensive and has limited options, but it is still convenient to have it on-site. The air conditioning unit can be quite noisy at night, which may cause some disturbance.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at HI USA New York for four nights, and I must say it was a fantastic experience. As a solo traveler, one of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to meet fellow backpackers and travelers from around the world, and this hostel provided the perfect setting for that. The dorm room I stayed in was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The beds were cozy, and the storage lockers provided ample space for my belongings. It was great to have the chance to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds, as we shared stories and travel tips throughout our stay. One of the best features of this hostel was access to communal facilities. The pool table was a hit, and it served as a great way to break the ice and engage in friendly competition with other guests. The terrace provided a lovely space to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring. The open kitchen was convenient for preparing meals, and it also encouraged interaction among guests. The lounge areas were cozy and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the city. Another aspect that impressed me was the availability of pay-per-use laundry facilities. For those who intend to stay longer, this service is invaluable. It's a thoughtful addition that shows the hostel's commitment to providing a comfortable and convenient stay for all guests. In terms of location, this hostel is a gem. New York City can be quite expensive, but staying at HI USA New York allows budget-conscious travelers like myself to experience the city without breaking the bank. With plenty of delis and coffee shops and even a subway stop in the vicinity, finding affordable and delicious food was never a problem. Overall, my stay at HI USA New York was a memorable one. The opportunity to make friends from around the world, the access to communal facilities, and the budget-friendly accommodation made it an excellent choice for any traveler.

Maybe the bunk beds could be slightly higher. As someone who is 6 ft tall, every time I sat up, I almost banged my head on the bunk above me. Nothing super serious but would be nicer for tall people to know what are they are in for :D
