Location, friendly staff, spacious room, comfy bed, A/C not too loud and helped drown out the street noise. Great hotel bar (Scarpetta’s) Would LOVE to buy an amenity bar “hutch” similar to what is in rooms. Housekeeping personnel was very lovely and hospitable. Front desk team was very accommodating and responded timely to requests or maintenence requests.

- no coffee maker in room and ird coffee too expensive. - very slow drain in sink. Remedied once FD was notified - limited IRD menu items and times - shower showing signs of neglected cleaning with mold in grout. - could use nightstand on opposite side of beds. Backup set of pillows in room - lack of map and highlights of immediate area. - lack of overnight IRD.

Everything about the hotel was lovely for a middle to higher range NYC hotel. The rooms are large and a relative bargain - hard to match in NYC - as is the location, and their restaurant, Scarpetto, is superb in every way. Attentive service and very clean rooms. Quirky decor with a fab Art Deco Bar. We were in a Deluxe Guest Corner King room, well appointed, large with very large, comfortable bed, sofa, small table, and 1 additional chair. Adequate cupboard space, but minimal drawers, esp if on a longish stay (8 days in our case).

NOTE, whilst there's a fabulous well-stocked bar in the room, there is no coffee or tea-making facility: quite a nuisance, and simply not up to the hotel's general standard; doesn't make sense at all. The bathroom was adequate, a little small, especially as the toilet is in the shower room; and the shower leaked onto floor. The sink is vast and quite unusually beautiful.

We had a nice stay at the hotel. It is very well located in Manhattan and we enjoyed the proximity to Wholefoods. We stayed here with 2 kids. The room was cosy and comfortable.

We missed the coffee/tea maker in the room. There was complimentary tea and coffee at the reception in the morning (from around 7.30 am), but this wasn't so convenient because we often wanted to make the tea in the afternoon (after a cold day outside) or during the night (because we were jet-lagged).

Location is great and the free tea/coffee is a nice touch in the lounge. Restaurant and bar are very good. Front desk staff were quick and efficient at check in.

The hotel is looking very tired now. I've stayed here a lot over the last 7 years and it really needs renovating. The carpets need cleaning or replacing.

The James New York No Mad was in a great location in Manhattan. Everything that we wanted to do nearby or easy transport links. Staff were helpful and polite when we got there. Was a nice touch with wine and savoury pastries early evening between 5-6pm. Unfortunately, sometimes the pastries in the afternoon were gone before you got there. There were morning pastries and hot refreshments in the morning between 7-9am unfortunately again, we had to be quick with the pastries as they would run out fast. The hotel itself is clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable and clean to sleep on, and the bathroom was clean, getting a little wear and tear in places. A nice touch of welcome amenities on the first day. It was very helpful that you could store your suitcase with reception before and after check in and out. But it was a nice stay.

Unfortunately there weren't any drawers to put clothes in only a small closet with a couple of hangers, so most of the hoilday had to keep everything in the suitcase. One thing again that let it down was that we couldn't use the bar on one of the evenings. We didn't feel welcomed and felt to be chucked out of the place by a very rude member of staff, just asking if we could come into the bar. So we decided to go to another bar around the corner, to be treated better, which we were.

The location was perfect to explore the city. The hotel staff was very friendly and professional, they accommodated every request that we had. The bed was comfortable and provided a good night’s sleep. The room was quiet, facing a small city square. Hot beverages were available free of charge every morning in the lobby.

The rooms are exceptionally small - we stayed in a “King” size room and there was no space to comfortably open a suitcase. We either had to move furniture around to access our bags or keep them in the middle of the walkway. There was no kettle or any coffee service in the room.

We had an incredible stay at this hotel! The staff was excellent. The location is perfect, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. We stayed in a double queen room that had loads of space, making our stay very comfortable. The beds were clean and comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep, and we appreciated the peace and quiet with no noise from outside. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a relaxing and convenient place to stay!

A kettle in the room would have been nice. While there are complimentary coffee and tea facilities in the reception area, I prefer having my first cup of coffee in the comfort of my room.

Location was fantastic and rooms were very cosy and comfortable. Security (who was an absolute gentleman) and staffed reception open 24/7 was a bonus. Complimentary live jazz music and wine or hot chocolate in the evening was an amazing atmosphere.

We were given the wrong room (no city view). When we called reception, they pushed back saying it was the fault of booking.com. We were told we could be upgraded the next day, which we were. But we’re also told we would be provided with a voucher for free breakfast at a cafe close by (which was actually only pot coffee and a croissant), and a bottle of wine, which never showed up… Gym was incredibly small, very busy and the equipment was limited. Extras (room service, laundry) were ridiculously overpriced.

The room is really spacious, and the location is really good. It was also warm during our 7 day stay in the winter. The hotel staff was really helpful, I had a parcel delivered and they got it to my room. I also liked the new feeling rooms, although some things like the bathroom cupboard was still old. Complimenrary coffee (& wine/hot chocolate during Christmas) was welcome, although the fruits were only apples.

Being an older now renovated hotel, the rooms are not that well insulated, so you can hear what others are doing in other rooms or on the hallway (which woke us up in a morning when some people were leaving at 7am). The $100 per night warranty is also a bit excessive (although we stayed for 7 nights so they lowered it to $500, I still find it to be quite high).

Beautiful building with period styling and features, much better that I even expected. The beds were extremely comfortable, the best hotel beds I’ve ever had. It was also pretty insulated from noise from the street and other rooms which was great. We booked a room with two queen beds for a family of four, which was pretty small as we expected it would be (it is New York after all!), but we didn’t spend much time there and when we did we were very comfortable.

My only minor complaint is that the few times we thought we might order room service it was never available, and they kept forgetting to stock up the toilet paper when they serviced the room. Minor complaints in an otherwise brilliant stay. Would definitely stay there again.
