The room was spacious and clean. Very warm. I had my own private bathroom. Coffee available in the morning. Easy access to the various places. Empire State Building was a 20 minute walk.

There was a window that you couldnt open. There was no hot water in the shower, but there was in the sink. Perhaps I should of said something.

Quirky, fun and a truly 'boho' hotel. This inexpensive hotel is in the true downtown area and close to all the 'main attractions'. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of hot water.

If you are looking for a sterile hotel with the usual amenities, the Carlton is not for you. If you are into a very 'trippy' scene, this is the one.

I love the hotel and it was nice to interact with the people who work at the front office - they are very welcoming and provided additional items we needed in the room as requested. The whole artistic vibe of the hotel and the unique rooms are really neat. The location is great for people coming in at Penn Station and there is also a parking garage very close by if you're driving. Close to subway stops to easily get around Manhattan or head to Brooklyn. Lots of good food and walkable neighborhood. Felt safe and the price point is unbeatable in Manhattan.

The hot water was out, unfortunately, and my partner and I had come back very late from a show during winter, needed a nice hot shower but were left with cold water :( the next morning we saw a posting that there was some work being done and the hot water was going to be out, I understand this stuff happens but it did kind of sour the experience a bit - my partner brought it up again after I mentioned how I liked the hotel and our stay, so this sort of thing does affect decisions of potential repeat customers. Maybe a discount on our stay or credit toward future stay could have been offered although I didn't think to ask at the time so this is not entirely on them.

If you thrive on FUNKY, this place is for you. Feels a little like some kind of Halloween Haunted House. A bit dingy and clearly has seen better days; it's NOT the Holliday Inn. But a great adventure, and I loved the art...like walking through a huge canvas. Staff was friendly and helpful. The bed was quite comfy. Subway c. 3 blocks away. Plenty of dining options.

Couldn't find a towel! Maybe I should have asked for it when I checked in...

This hotel is very unique. Each room is painted by a different artist, and so they all have very different atmospheres. All rooms have really great imagery painted on them. Some of the rooms are really cool and funky, but may also be quite intense, so keep in mind that you should have an open mind about where you stay! The rooms themselves are comfy and well-equipped. The staff was super kind and helpful. All of them were happy to help and have a chat with us.

One thing to consider is the heating. The heating of the rooms seems to come from central heating, and so the rooms can get quite warm at night. This was not a problem for us, but might be worth keeping in mind when choosing your room. Not a dislike per se, but some rooms do not have ensuites, this might be worth considering when booking the rooms whether this is something you care about.

Quirky and unique location to post up for a few days while in the city. The hotel lives up to its artsy reputation and was a real trip to experience the hallways. Oh, and the lobby cat is the real star of the show here. The guy who checked me in was super laid back and let me choose my own room out of 5 available choices.

Definitely can tell that the facility can use some updated equipment. I understand that it is a budget hotel but there were some concerns I had regarding electrical junction boxes in my room that were coming out of the walls and made charging things a tricky endeavor. Also the bathroom I used on the third floor seems to have a pretty severe leak they need to address soon.

The staff was nice, and the artwork throughout the building was so unique, I really enjoyed taking the time to look at it. The rooms themselves were clean and comfortable, and I could tell that the shared bathrooms on each floor are cleaned often, and I had no complaints. 10/10 feline staff member as well. Also the location is great, good neighborhood day or night.

Again, I have no complaints, though I would like to tell others, and it is worth noting, that this is not a new building. It is well-equipped and sturdy, though not "modern", and could seem a bit narrow in the halls and stairwells to people from out of town who are used to ample elbow room, but it is not cramped or dingy, and everything works as it should.

The first night we arrived there was a duo playing guitar and singing with a small bunch of folk sitting around. The next day we discovered the two were serious musicians: one played with the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, Debby Harry and others whilst the other was a touring band member of the Black Crowes. That was our introduction to the Carlton Arms! As an artist, I found the decor amazing. The walls and rooms on each floor were painted from floor to ceiling by artists from around the world. Just outside our bedroom door was a little rat by the British artist, Banksy, which made our day. On our last night, there was a book-signing by a Dutch war journalist who we got to meet. If you like your hotel to be clean, modern and soul-less don't come here. But if you like art and culture and meeting other folk who've travelled and lived and think outside the box, then I'd definitely recommend staying here. And I almost forgot to say that the location - on 25th East Street, bang in the middle of Manhattan - couldn't be better. You can walk to the Empire States Building and Times Square from the hotel. Plus, there's a great bagel spot just across the street which do an excellent selection of bagels and great Columbian coffee.

Our room had been freshly painted so unfortunately the smell was quite strong. Also, as it was separated from the next room by only a loose-fitting door, we could hear quite alot of the goings-on with our neighbours. Sound insulation wasn't a strong point! The hotel staff did offer us another room though when we mentioned it so we could have moved elsewhere if we'd really wanted to. The shower on our floor wasn't the cleanest - cracked tiles and the like. But the water was hot and there was an assortment of shower gels and shampoos in various languages left by previous guests, which gives you an idea of the sort of place it is.

This is a funky little hotel in Manhattan which has a feel of a hostel. The shared bathroom and shower in the hallway are pretty clean. The room is small but clean. Like it that there is a very small wash basin in the room. There is a small common room on the second floor where you can get hot water. The location is great. There is even an authentic Chinese restaurant downstairs next to the entry. The property is close to the Park Ave., Fifth Ave., and many stores and restaurants. Guests need a key to enter the hotel, so it feels pretty safe. The neighborhood is right next to the Baruch College, so it feels safe too walking around in the evening. The hotel is right next to the Third Avenue, so it is pretty easy to hail a taxi or call a Uber.

There is no elevator on the property. If you have a heavy suitcase, you will need to carry it upstairs through a narrow staircase. The property is probably not suitable for people with physical challenges.

The Carlton Arms is an incredibly unique hotel full of varied art around the whole hotel and guest rooms to look at! You don't know which room you are going to get so it's a surprise when you check in. Our room was very big, with plenty of space and very clean. The corridors and artwork around the hotel make it a memorable stay and enjoyable! The staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The beds were comfortable and facilities were great. We stayed in a room with an ensuite and it had everything we needed! Really close to transport links like the subway, neighbourhood felt safe with local amenities! Would definitely reccomend to anyone as a unique stay and would come again if visiting New York!
