Kana was lovely and helped us make an inexpensive private onsen reservation the night we arrived, and also helped us find nearby restaurants to eat at. We stayed in the private double room and didn't have any issues with other guests. We were able to hold our luggage in the lobby after we checked out in order to spend the rest of the day on the Hakone golden route.

Honestly, I have no complaints about the hostel. However, Moto-hakone (the town near the lake) felt strangely depressing. Perhaps winter is the off-season, but I would have preferred spending more time and getting dinner near the hostel instead after taking the lake cruise.

Kana-san, the host, was amazing! She was very kind, fun to talk to, and helped with local bookings as well as recommendations around Hakone! The location was also excellent for the price! The beds were comfortable and the living room was spacious.

Although a vibe for being inside a Japanese post office, the insulation in the dorm rooms made sleeping difficult unless wearing a winter hat and warm clothes. Kana-san provided a blanket which was very nice! Be weary of cold winter months and hot summers if sensitive to temperature differences while sleeping. (Although the AC/Heater was on the highest setting, it couldn't make a dent in the room temperature)

Kana (the wonderful woman running the hostel) is absolutely the best! I've never had a more welcoming and helpful host. She really went out of her way to make sure I had the best stay possible. Also, the location is easy to get to by bus and has sidewalks (it's rare in the area) so it's easy to reach a convenience store.

The top bunks need better mattresses and better shading. The light coming in from the huge windows is a problem. This can be fixed with some blackout curtains and extra cushioning. The lower bunks are by far more comfortable and shaded. The hostel itself is very basic, but it serves its purpose. Aside from the lobby's carpet that needs replacing, the place is clean.

Hakone hostel 1914 is an old historical post office turn hostel. Location is great ina small village opposite the famous fujiya hotel. Its a hostel with only 5 rooms. A place where you can meet alot of nice travellers. The main feature in this hostel is Kana the lady who manages the place . Shes great, kind always have time for each of her guest and very helpful. Shes full of information about hakone and if she does not have the information she checks it out for you. Her kindness and warmth makes a huge difference and the reason why this hostel have grest reviews. Yes its not ensuite and has only 2 showers but we never have to wait long for a vacant one. Guess everyone comes back at different times. Theres a small kitvhen with a hot plate microwave and also free coffee and tea. My sister was not well and she never ceases to adk how she was daily snd when we left she gave het some sick bags in case she gets sick on the bus. These little touches warm our hesrts. Thank you do much Kana for looking after us for the lovely chats and for a great stsy. May you be healthy and happy alwsys. Keep travelling.

Kana the host is an absolute gem! <3 Super kind, very helpful, joined us for chats in the evening with sake and chocolate, arranged onsen visits and gave great recommendations. Will definitely come back just to stay with her again. Also the beds were the best beds I have stayed in in a month of solo travelling in Japan. Basically double beds and superbly comfortable. Also location wise it's great as it's right next to a bus stop on the Hakone loop and 5 min walk from the train station (also on Hakone loop).

I guess in the shared room you do hear most noise. But with four people in total it's very minimal.

This is by far one of the best hostels we've stayed at in Japan, and probably Asia! And one of the main reasons is our host, Kana. She was incredibly welcoming and sat with us on arrival and throughout our stay, helping with local onsen recommendations, sightseeing tours and restaurants. She also helped book all of these things for us! She is very knowledgeable about the local area and has lots of great advice. Kana is amazing! The hostel itself is very cosy and clean, with comfortable rooms - we stayed in the dorm room which was perfect and good value for money. It's only a few minutes walk from the local station and very close to bus stops and local cafes and shops. Thank you Kana once again for such a lovely stay. 10/10

Hakone hostel 1914 is 100yrs old. Its cheap to stay. There are 2 showers and 3 toilets and you may ve to wait for a while to use but its ok. Theres a hotplate, microwave and seating area. The hostel is very clean. It only ve 4 private rooms and a dormitory. We met alot of very nice people. The one tjing that makes this hostel special is the lady that runs it. Her name is Kana. She manages the place on her own and stays there. Nothing is too much for her. She has information abput everything and if she does not ve she searches on the internet for you.

There are no words to express our gratitude for everything Kana did for us. The building itself is a piece of history, and the owner has made the place feel like a home with its own story. We stayed in the private room, and everything was perfect. There aren't many guests, so we had no issues when we wanted to use the bathroom or shower. You can cook or shop at the nearby stores. Additionally, there is plenty of information about everything in the area, and Kana's recommendations and guidance were invaluable. Kana, thank you for showing us the most beautiful side of Japanese culture!

Be careful because most places close rather early, but this is not a negative point itself. Just something you should keep it in mind!

My stay here was excellent. The facilities themselves are good. I had a private room which met my expectations. The bed was extremely comfortable, and despite the information about road noise, it was quiet enough that I slept well. The kitchen had everything I needed, The location around Miyanoshita was great, with a lot of nearby attractions, convenience stores, and good access to transport. Last, but not least: The dorm manager, Kana, is amazing. She was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. 700 reviews and almost every one mentions how lovely she is. Its no exaggeration. The weather for my trip was poor, and my planning for Hakone was worse. Despite that, Kana helped me to salvage my Hakone trip into something truly memorable. She went far out of her way multiple times to make my Hakone stay more enjoyable. Kana is an amazing hostess, a blast to chat with, and a major highlight of my trip to Hakone. If I ever return to Hakone, I'll definitely book here again.

Kana, the host was simply amazing! A bundle of energy and enthusiasm, so helpful and eager to help assist in planning your visit around the area- she had great local food recommendations, hiking route advice and even great photo locations (that no influencers know about… thank god!) Place itself is cozy (former post office). Though as people have mentioned walls are thin and a fair amount of creaking-though most travellers who choose here seem to be respectful. 100% recommend this place, and will definitely stay here again.
