It’s an historic property with period features. Beautifully located - peaceful, yet within easy reach of York by bus (Route 11), cab or car (Castle Car Park offers an affordable flat rate evening charge after 6pm). Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Staff are wonderful, without exception. Dinner was served with elan, beautifully prepared and delicious. Breakfasts were comprehensive, appetising and offered loads of choice. Easy parking. The whole place is immaculate. The grounds are a delight and expertly well maintained.
The dinner menu is wonderful, but priced at the top end and does not enable guests to choose lighter, simpler options. As a result, we only ate in the hotel on one of our three nights.

I recently stayed at one of the most beautiful properties during my solo trip to York, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, everything about the property exuded charm, comfort, and warmth. The **cleanliness** was absolutely impeccable. I'd give it a **12/10**. Every corner of the property was spotless, and the attention to detail was truly commendable. The **staff** were incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring my stay was seamless. They were always ready to assist with a smile, making me feel right at home. A solid **10/10** for their service! The **food** was another highlight of my stay. Each meal was a delightful culinary experience, filled with flavors that left me wanting more. Definitely a **10/10** here as well. As for the **property itself**, it was nothing short of stunning. The architecture, interiors, and overall ambiance were breathtaking, making it the most memorable place I've stayed at in the UK. It deserves more than a perfect score **12/10**! I absolutely loved my stay and would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting York. I can’t wait to return!

After some less than great hotel experiences on our honeymoon we desperately needed our experience at Middlethorpe! From the very moment we walked through the front doors we were treated like royalty. We had informed the hotel in advance we were on our honeymoon and were delighted to be told we had been upgraded to a suite. We were shown to our room by a very polite and helpful porter who told us a little about the hotel and spa. Our suite was just heavenly! Spotlessly clean, with everything you could need. We ate in the restaurant our first night and had a wonderful experience, waited on by professional and accommodating staff, even with complimentary bubbly! We used the pool a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed both it and the whirlpool. As with everything else the facilities were very very clean and well looked after. If we were rich we'd be back every year, just lovely!
Our only negatives were: The loud motorised gardening equipment being used opposite our room at about 9am, although not early we were on honeymoon and were looking forward to sleeping in, There weren't really sufficient tea or coffee supplies for 2 days, although more was brought to us very quickly when we requested it. The wifi was pretty patchy.

This location was brimming with history and elegance. It was very old world and the staff treated us like royalty. The staff carried our suitcases, gave us advice about buses and opened doors for us. There is a tiny butlers lift which saved going up all the stairs. The view was lovely and the room and bathroom was luxurious. Lovely touches like a pod coffee machine in the room, big fluffy towels, comfy bed, and a top sheet. The breakfast choice was amazing and it was lovely to have fresh fruit as well. The parlour room that all guests could use was filled with beautiful things and was very fancy.

Beautiful English historic country house, very tastefully curated and decorated. Very comfortable and beautiful open rooms to relax in. Staff were extremely helpful and attentive, excellent service. Great spa too with lovely pool and high quality treatments available.
Rooms a little cool in winter due to the age of the property, understandable. But lovely real fires downstairs

An amazing stay here. The staff are wonderful always on hand with a genuine warm smile and greeting to help your stay be special. The breakfast offer was delicious which sets you up for the day. Rooms are immaculate with an expresso coffee machine. A few hundred metres away from the hotel is York race course where you can walk around and then drop into York City Centre, around a 50 mins walk. A first class stay, unreservedly recommended and will be staying again.

We were upgraded to main building, lovely en-suit room with wonderful view to front aspect. Bed very comfortable, shower/bath good, complimentary toiletries lovely. Breakfast was hot and tasty and plentiful. Good parking available, were able to leave car and use taxis into city. Fabulous real fires lit around hotel - so cheerful. The hotel itself was beautiful with wonderful features and impressive rooms. Easy quick access to the city of York (we used taxi) but there is a bus stop just at the end of the road. Hotel staff called taxis for us each time. The grounds are beautiful to walk around. Definitely would like a return visit.
There wasn't anything we didn't like.

It was excellent l from start to finish and we didn't want to leave . Stayed as guests but it felt like we had been invited as friends as we were made so welcome especially by Michael who was such a lovely gentleman. We loved the Spa across the road and had a wonderful couple of hours in the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Infact we almost had it all to ourselves what a treat! The dinner was amazing followed by a sumptuous breakfast nothing was hurried or too much trouble. Excellent service and a beautiful place..... we will definitely be back.
It was all magnificent and we loved every minute.

The hotel and grounds were beautiful. The rooms were spotless. The staff were absolutely delightful. Everyone of them was polite, friendly and very helpful. Everyone greeted you with a smile. We had to move rooms because the unexpected warm weather caused an influx of harlequin ladybirds. We were treated with the utmost respect and offered a choice of rooms to move to. We used the spa as well. Same quality.
I had been advised that the restaurant was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Once there we discovered there was a, simple, limited dinner menu served for guests. As these were called "snacks" on the information, we did not realize it was actually dinner! We ate and it was perfectly satisfactory. Maybe advise potential guests that there is a simplified limited dinner menu available on Mondays and Tuesdays .

The property was stunning, it was very grand and easy to find. We stayed in the courtyard area and the room was lovely, very oldie worldie with everything you needed. They did have the spa section which was literally over the road from us and was a nice extra. Staff were helpful and polite.
It was very quiet, it really could have done with some back ground music in the drinks room / eating area. You could literally hear people eating, people walking around. The facilities in spa were good, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi but the actual changing rooms were tiny, only 2/3 could probably get ready at a time with one private changing room & one toilet.
