Stayed 4 nights here (3 nights in a dorm) and had a great trip. Well located. Newly done rooms with big single beds which had curtains and plenty of plug sockets. The place has just been refurbed so everything felt in good condition. Staff are really friendly. Sauna is a lovely touch. Free tea / coffee / peppermint tea = more nice touches.

A few minor teething problems that can easily be improved: - there are no bins in the rooms - the shower door upstairs didn’t have a lock - more kitchen utensils are needed because when busy, you sometimes had to wait for kitchen stuff - more seating areas are required both for chilling and for eating. People struggled to find a seat at times - the provision of soap dispensers in the showers would be well received, particularly for the price you are paying

Awesome location. Very well maintained. One of the best hostels I have stayed in. The highlight for me is The deck for night view of Mt Cook is incredible.

one of my favourite hostels! I was here 8 years ago and am so pleased it hasn’t changed. it is so cosy and welcoming, I love that it feels like a log cabin In the snowy mountains. The sauna is awesome. it’s super close to good walks. The staff during my stay were lovely. Bed was comfy. kitchen was well appointed. showers were hot and powerful. great stay

parking is a bit crowded but managed to find somewhere. Sadly apparently it is being renovated soon - please please keep the feel of the place the same, keep the cosy log cabin vibe and don’t make it all white and lime green and clinical like other hostels (like Queenstown YHA for example). it doesn’t suit the mountain vibe! this hostel is perfect and doesn’t need much doing to it. It’s my most recommended hostel for sure. I will be gutted if it’s changed too much and loses its magic!

Haka House suited us as we wanted to spend our tourist dollars on activities not accommodation and restaurants. The room was small and we had to share bathroom facilities however the price was right for us. We bought groceries in Ashbuton on the way and prepared all meals in their impressive kitchen. There is a small fridge in the room and several in the shared kitchen facility. If you want a little luxury and incredible views of the mountains, the Hermitage Hotel is located within easy walking distance (good coffee and a shop that sells souvenirs and some provisions). Check out the tourist information centre as it’s excellent to learn more about the area. The guy at the front desk organised our helicopter flight up to Mount Cook (exceptional). Highly recommend as long as you are happy to share the facilities.

Haka House has the warm feeling of comraderie and felt almost like being in college again. And that was 50 years ago for this solo traveler. I had not stayed at a hostel in 45 years (in Asia), but I found this to be a very pleasant experience. The facilities are clean and attractive, And you cannot beat the location in this gorgeous mountain valley near Mount Cook, Tasman Lake, and the Hermitage resort, where I splurged for two delicious buffet breakfasts and a dinner at the Alpine Restaurant (which has many vegan food choices). By staying at Haka House, I was able to keep my 2-night lodging cost nearly US$700 less than staying at the Hermitage.

You will need to have a small padlock for the storage bin in the shared bunk-bed rooms.

Have previously stayed at YHA Mt Cook, and it has undergone a huge upgrade since converting to Haka House. Each dorm room is very practical; each bed has hooks for hanging, curtains for privacy, powerpoints and a lamp and little cubbies for personal items. The lockers are good sizes too. Communal spaces have been redone and there is plenty of space to relax. Staff were accommodating in allowing us to use card to rent towels rather than necessitating cash, given the only ATM at Hermitage Hotel was out of order.

Kitchen can get quite busy as a lot of people cook there at once (given limited eating out options in Mt Cook village). Could do with more tea towels/or ones that are better at drying, as there were only ever wet towels for use. One of the female shower drains was a bit blocked, however it had very good water pressure!

Great lodge in the foot of the Mt Cook with a great view. The place is comfortable in the dorm and the shared space.

The common areas is out of this world. Loved it! Also, it has a sauna?! Super cool. Also there are books, games and other things to do in the evenings.

WiFi didn’t work at all when I was there and since I paid a ridiculous price per night, it really bothered me. Small things I’ve noticed: The cleaning staff seemed to be a little grumpy and rarely smiled back. It was pretty weird when they came into the rooms to clean, without saying hello or anything. The kettle, toaster, some locks in a few bathroom doors didn’t work and the bathrooms didn’t have a hairdryer. All in all my stay was super good. Thanks for having me.

It was very clean and the kitchen was great, with an oven, multiple hobs and a couple of different microwaves. There was also a sauna which was fantastic. Shower pressure was great too and the beds each had sockets and little cubbies that made the rooms very comfortable. I also came with my parents and it was comfortable enough for them, with a few other older patrons that made them feel OK with it being a hostel! The location was also amazing. The courtyard with the mountains views was unbeatable.

Because it is wood there was quite a bit of noise from the room next to us or just during the afternoon when you wanted to relax after the walks/hikes.

The hostel is located in the center of Mt Cook Village. From there, it is easy to go to the heliport for the Tasman Glacier tours. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains, the staff's attention is good. The beds are comfortable and the heating is really good. The hostel is clean and organized.

It is not their fault, but it would be a plus to sell products for cooking. You have to bring them or you will have to go eat at the Hermitage hotel, which is too expensive at 80 NZD but is a buffet type. There is no supermarket in the village, you have to travel for 40 minutes to find a town. The rooms are too narrow; we stayed in a four-bed room, and it was very narrow.
